Top Ten Characters I Want To Be For Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays!  Random Thought: Why on earth is there Christmas stuff next to the Halloween stuff at Target.  I don’t understand this!  Anyway, I have the book-ish and the non-bookish, because, well, I couldn’t help but come up with so many ideas!  (Me being me, I managed to relate most of my choices to books).  Because I’m going off on so many tangents, I really need to watch Hocus Pocus and It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, which are my 2 favorite movies to watch this time of year.  (Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorite Christmas movies, because I’m weird like that).

  1. Luna Lovegood.  It would be so fun to dress up as Luna!  She’s so quirky and odd and one year, I’m going to have dress up as her.  (Not next year, because I already have some costumes in mind, but maybe the year after that).
  2. Speaking of Halloween costumes for next year, I really want to dress up as someone from Night Vale.  Night Vale definitely inspires costumes for years- hooded figures, scientists, librarians, Night Vale Radio interns, Hiram McDaniels, the Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home, Cecil, Old Woman Josie (or one of her angels), the Apache Tracker (except that would be way too offensive, so scratch that) and the Glow Cloud…to name quite a few.
  3. This randomly popped into mind, but it would be really fun to dress up as a character from a historical romance novel. I have no particular character in mind, because I don’t read enough of it to have someone in mind.  It’s mostly an excuse to wear a ballgown or poofy dress.
  4. I’ve always wanted to dress up as a flapper.  I know I’ve read a book or two set during the 1920’s, and it seems like
  5. And a goddess.  Probably Greek, because I’m the most familiar with Greek mythology.  I’ve always liked Athena.
  6. The Queen Of Hearts!  There’s nothing wrong with Alice, but for some reason, I’d much rather be The Queen Of Hearts.
  7. Eve from Morganville Vampires.  It would be fun to dress up as Eve for a night.  Probably because there’s something intriguing and very out-of-my-comfort zone about the Goth look.
  8. Tinkerbell!  I love fairies, and am utterly confused as to why I have never dressed up as Tinkerbell.  On a semi-related note, it would also be fun to dress up as Tiger Lily, as with how she’s described in Jodi Lynn Anderson’s re-telling.
  9. A Disney Princess.  Preferably Snow White, Ariel, Belle or Merida.  Cinderella would be pretty awesome too.  Again, I just want an excuse to wear a big, poofy dress, but Disneybound has some awesome ideas for Disney inspired outfits.
  10. Speaking of Disney-inspired outfits, that’s where I got the inspiration for my Halloween costume this year!  I’m dressing up as Anna from Frozen, and I have most of my outfit put together.  I just need to crochet a shawl before Friday and finish the hat, and I’ll have something I can wear throughout the year.  I can totally pull this off in 3 days.

Top Ten Tuesdays: Top Ten Characters I Want Sitting At My Lunch Table

Top Ten Characters I Want Sitting At My Lunch Table

This is such a good topic, as it’s back to school time!  I’ve been out of school for quite some time, but if I did find myself back in school, this are the characters I’d want to be sitting with.

  1. Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. Everyone needs a Luna in their life, and she’d be great to have lunch with because she’s so quirky.
  2. Mia from Princess Diaries.  Mia and I would so be friends in real life.  We’re totally the type of people to freak out about stuff, so we’d probably get along great.
  3. Meg from A Wrinkle In Time.  I love Meg, and she’s another character I would probably be friends with in real life.  I feel like we’re a lot alike.
  4. Claire from Morganville Vampires.  I feel like Claire and I would be friends in real life, because we both seem to be into school, and trouble seems to find her, she’s also a pretty nice person.
  5. Anna from Anna And The French Kiss.  It would be so fun to go to the movies with her!
  6. Iko from Cinder.  I love Iko, and she’s such a loyal and good friend that I’d totally want to have lunch with her.
  7. Joanne from Weather Wardens.  I really want her sense of fashion, and she’d be a great person to shop with!
  8. Ana from Incarnate.  Is it surprising that I think Ana and I would be friends in real life?  Because I’m pretty sure that we’d be good friends…I feel like we’ve both struggled with being different and finding our place.  While it’s something we all experience, I feel like I’d totally invite her to sit with me.
  9. Tonks from Harry Potter.  Mostly because Tonks is fun and tough, and I’d like to think that maybe some of that would rub off on me.
  10. Fred and George from Harry Potter.  I know it’s weird that Hermione isn’t on the list, but Fred and George are really funny, and it’d be hilarious to have them around.

Top Ten Characters I’d Want With Me On A Deserted Island

When I started thinking about this list, I had the hardest time with it!  But 10 characters were really easy to come up with, because, well, it’s good to have all sorts of people with you.  My list is definitely random, except for a couple of super-obvious choices (in my opinion), and there are definitely no limits to what the characters can do, because it’s my deserted island, and the characters I picked would totally have all of the abilities they would in their respective books.

  1. Hermione is one of the obvious answers, but she’s smart and she’s a witch, so she’d be great to have around.
  2. Katniss is the other obvious choice, but she’s good with a bow and arrow, so we’d be good as far as food goes.
  3. Four from Divergent.  I need someone to swoon over,
  4. Etienne St. Clair from Anna And The French Kiss.  You can never have too many hot guys to swoon over.
  5. Mia from The Princess Diaries.  So I have someone to freak out with.
  6. Dr. Steiner from Ten Tiny Breaths.  He is a very strange and unconventional psychiatrist, but you never know when you’re going to need one.  Even if he can’t prescribe any medication, it can’t hurt.
  7. Perry from Under The Never Sky.  He’s able to provide for the Tides no matter what’s going on, so he’d definitely be good to have around.
  8. Valek from Poison Study.  You never know when an assassin/spy is going to come in handy.
  9. The Weasley Twins.  They are pretty entertaining, which will make being on a deserted island a little bit easier to handle.
  10. Charlie Weasley.  Apparently, Harry Potter characters are good to have around.  Considering Charlie works with dragons, he’d be good to have around for all of the wild animals roaming around.

Gilmore Girls

Gilmore Girls is one of my all-time favorite shows, and I was so sad when it was cancelled!  I first came across Gilmore Girls on ABC Family, where they show reruns every weekday, and unfortunately, I only managed to watch 7 season (the last season) in it’s entirety.  I had only seen random episodes of the previous 5 season, and missed season 6 completely, so everything didn’t make sense.  Thanks to the wonder that is TV on DVD, I managed to get all 7 seasons, and watched the entire show in it’s entirety.

Listening to the Gilmore Girls Re-watch podcast, I felt inspired and compelled to re-watch the series.  I’ve seen each episode a few times, so I’m not confused or anything, but it’s a lot more fun listening to it when I’ve seen the episode right before listening.

It’s a great show, with a lot of great dialogue, witty banter, and pop culture references that go right over my head.  Plus, the relationships between all of the characters is really interesing.

I suppose it would be a good idea to talk about what the show is actually about, right?  It’s about Lorelei Gilmore and her daughter Lorelei (nickname: Rory) and their lives in fictional Stars Hollow.  I like the relationship between Rory and her mom, and the very different relationships that both Lorelei’s have with Richard and Emily, who are Rory’s grandparents and Lorelei’s parents.  The biggest thing, though, is the fact that Lorelei got pregnant at 16 and then left home some time after having Rory.  I also love the very colorful people of Stars Hallow- Miss Patty, Babette, Kirk, Luke and Taylor, to name a few.  And of course, Sookie, Lorelei’s best friend and Lane, who is Rory’s best friend.  And Paris…I could go on listing the different characters.

Listening to the podcast has really helped me think about the show in a different way- one cohost (Arkle) is a fan of the show, and Angela (another cohost) is watching the series for the first time.  It’s hilarious when Arkle brings something up, and it’s clear, it’s not trying to spoil anything for Angela.  They’ve had a couple cohosts- Colleen, who was around for a while, and now someone else (I think her name is Nina) when Colleen had to leave.  Both are fans of the show as well, and around the same age as Rory is in the 1st 3 seasons.  It’s really interesting to hear Angela’s point of view since she sometime brings up things I never thought about.  Rewatching the show, I definitely don’t like Dean and I’m glad it didn’t work out with Rory.  If only they could combine Dean’s companionship with Jess’ reading a lot and Logan’s spontaneity…then you’d have a great guy for Rory!

Sometimes, Rory is a little Mary Sue-ish for me.  I can relate to liking school and reading a lot, but sometimes…she’s a little too perfect.  In contrast to her mom, who has made some mistakes.  It’s definitely referenced several times throughout the first 3 seasons that Lorelei has let down her parents and severely disappointed them and that whole bit.  I wonder if it’s done on purpose to show that while the hopes and dreams Richard and Emily had for Lorelei didn’t happen, it could happen with Rory, who is definitely the child they wanted to Lorelei to be.

It’s been pretty fun rewatching it, and I may have to start doing that with a few other shows I like…

I Have A Confession To Make

I was going to be all productive over the weekend, and work on my plot bunnies.  I had high hopes of doing some character profiles, and actually attempt to make some decisions on what to do.  I was even going to do some writing on Saturday or Sunday.

So it should be no surprise that I didn’t do anything.  I didn’t write anything, I didn’t make any decisions, work on any of my characters…but I did write a couple of notes for one plot bunny.  And then realized that it was something I had written a few lines up.  So I didn’t even come up with any original ideas either.

The clock is ticking, and I have just over 6 weeks to finish up these ideas.  It seems like a lot of time, but for a procrastinator like me, it’s really not that much time.  Maybe I need to spend some time at the library, since that seems to be one of the few places I can actually get any work done.

So, I’ll try to work on a couple characters, and try to decide what direction I want to go in for a couple of them.  I can’t promise that I’ll get any work done, since I seem to be really bad at it right now, but I’ll definitely try.  I just need to sit down and actually do it.

Here’s hoping I will!

It All Comes Back To Harry Potter

For me, I owe a lot to Harry Potter.  It’s the one series I can read over and over, and never get tired of, it’s the example I use for so many things, and most of all, the very first thing Iwrote on my own, besides journal entries, was a Harry Potter fanfiction.

The fact that Harry Potter inspired me to start writing on my own is amazing!  Would I have started writing my own novels regardless?  Maybe, but it might have taken me a lot longer if it weren’t for Harry Potter.  Writing fanfiction gave me the confidence to come up with my own novels and commit to the the screen.  The more I write, the better I get at writing, but writing Harry Potter fanfiction let me write, and just focus on my writing.

Hogwarts is one of the very few places I can escape to when I need a break from the real world.  It’s comforting to know that Hogwarts is always there when I need it.  And if I ever have kids, Harry Potter is one of the stories I’m going to share with them.

Here’s a great video for everyone: It’s from the London Premiere of Deathly Hallows, Part 2, and it’s speeches from Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and J.K. Rowling.  I started crying during Emma’s speech and completely starting bawling during J.K. Rowling’s speech.  Watch it now!  You know you want to!

Halfway There!

I’ve reached the halfway mark!  At least in terms of wordcount.  It was very exciting, and I definitely need to start wrapping things up.  I have a definite idea in mind now for it.  It’s strange how everything becomes more clear after the halfway point.  Currently, I’m at 25,069, so while I’m not caught up, I will be soon!

As for my other writing, I did work on a couple characters, as well as doing my other projects for the week.  I definitely like splitting them up over 2 or 3 days, as opposed to one each day.  Once I start writing, I want to keep going with something, so that’s what I’m going to stick with.  It is working, and since I’m all about doing what works these days, I should definitely do that.  I’m definitely hoping to have a rough draft finished for Turning Point, the Giant Prehistoric Chicken, and my NCIS fanfic by November  Maybe even one or two of my HP fanfics, depending on how much I write for them.  It’s weird, but exciting at the same time.

That’s about it, so have a great day!

Day Two Of Camp NaNo!

Camp NaNo started yesterday!  I’ve been waiting and waiting for it, and now it’s arrived!  For anyone who’s not familiar with it, it’s NaNo…year-round.  It’s great for people who can’t/don’t want to do NaNo in November or for people who want to do more than one novel in a year.  While I’m a big fan of multiple novels going at one time, I know it’s not for everyone, so it’s a good way to get all of those ideas out.  Plus, last year, I learned that 2 50k novels is the most I’m willing to do, so it’s perfect for me!.  This month, I’m doing an NCIS fanfiction, and it’s based off of the season finale.  The timing of Camp NaNo is perfect, because I’m hoping to have this thing (mostly) written by the time the season 9 premiere rolls around in mid-September.  I think it’ll also be a good test run for NaNo, because this month, I’m planning to keep up with my other novels while writting a 50k novel.  I’m not sure how completed they’ll be by November, but at least one should be done, maybe 2 or 3 if I’m lucky.  Anyway, it’ll be good to see how it works out.

It’s off to a really slow start, and my own theories about what’s going on aren’t thought out at all, so I’m winging it.  I’ll definitely have to write those down as soon as possible.  I’m not sure if it’ll reach 50k, but I’m going to try!  And if I have to word-pad, I will.  Since I didn’t do any planning, I am having some trouble with it, so once I come up with my own theories, it’ll (hopefully) get easier.  I think part of it is because I’m so used to doing Harry Potter fanfiction, and it’s a lot easier to reference Harry Potter than it is to reference NCIS.  I’ve seen bits and pieces of the first 7 seasons, and only the second half of season 8, so I’m not completely caught up on it yet.  I feel like I have a good handle on the characters, but still, I feel like I’m missing a few things.  There is this fan wiki site which looks like it’ll be really useful, and I’ll probably refer to it quite often this month.  I’ve already learned something: if you’re doing a fanfic based on your theories on what might happen in the next season, it’s a really good idea to write them down before you starting writing the actual fanfic!  Since it’s only day 2, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

It’s strange to novel in a non-November month, but it’ll be a good way to narrow down the field for November.  My last (and only) attempt at doing a novel that’s not during NaNo failed- I did get 10,000 words or so, so it wasn’t a complete loss.  I definitely got into the mindset that November=writing, but I’m slowly trying to change that, so maybe I’ll get farther along in noveling the rest of the year.  I can do it!

So, yesterday, I wrote 1746, which was rather surprising, considering how much I didn’t want to write.  I struggled with the first 800-ish words, and after that it got slightly easier.  Maybe today will go better.

The Evolution Of A Family Tree

Today’s post is how my family tree has evolved over the last couple weeks or so.

The Basic Structure Of My Family Tree

The picture above is the basic structure of the family.  It starts off with Chastity, who is the great-grandmother, and goes from there.  I wanted to do it in pencil so I could erase things as needed.  It’s a little bit messy, but it works.

Rough Draft, Version One Of The Family Tree

This picture is the first version of the tree, complete with names.  Except for the one section that doesn’t have names, because I didn’t give myself enough room…and I didn’t feel like changing it so I could have enough room.  Plus, I needed to redo the tree since it was still a little funky.  Still in pencil, but that’s because it’s easier to change things if it’s all in pencil.

Family Tree, Version 2 Of The Rough Draft

And this is the most recent tree, with names for most everyone…the only exceptions being the four unnamed children, who will probably have a few mentions.  I also have a few notes- mostly on who’s dead, which will be a good reference for the different funerals they’ll all be going to.  Plus, I have a note on who’s divorced and a note that someone’s a single parent.  It’s still in pencil, thank goodness, because I did have to make a couple changes to it.  I still don’t like how it’s formatted, but it’s better than the previous draft.  I think what I need to do is have a bigger version, which will probably help.

For the super final version (that hasn’t happened yet), I’ll probably do different colors to distinguish between the different branches.  I’m going to put off that super final version on posterboard until October in case things change between now and then.  And honestly, that’s highly likely, depending on what I come up with.  I know posterboard isn’t expensive, but I really don’t want to buy it until I have to.

Honestly, I’m so glad I have a list of names I like, because it was really helpful to have a list I could pick from.  I tried to make the names as different as I could, which didn’t always work in some cases.  But I’m not too worried since, I’m going to focus on only a few people anyway.  Writing it all out definitely helped me in terms of how they’re all related.  I took a look at a basic family tree detailing how cousins are related, and it makes a lot more sense now that I have names I can attach to each spot on the chart.

I think this novel is definitely going to be an adventure!

And on a random side-note:

Pottermore has finally been revealed!  I’ve been waiting to see what it is, and it’ll be the only place to get an e-reader version of the series.  Plus, JKR has a lot of unused info concering the series, so that will be revealed too!  It sounds awesome and I can’t wait until October, when everything will be set to go.

The Weasley Twins

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a character spotlight, so I’m focusing today’s spotlight on the Weasley twins.  You can’t talk about one without the other, so you’re getting a good look at two of my favorite characters.

The Weasley twins are the comic relief of the series, eventually opening their own joke shop after leaving Hogwarts.  I had to giggle in the Sorcerer’s Stone when they joked about sending a toilet seat to Ginny.  Their birthday is certainly fitting as they were born on April Fool’s day.  Sometimes it seems like April Fool’s day is everyday with these two around.

The fact that they have their own drawer in Filch’s office shows the awesomeness that is the Weasley twins.  And their swamp was so epic that Flitwick left a small part of it in their honor.  And who can forget the whole “don’t worry about you-know-who because you should be worring about u-no-poo” thing was hilarious!

Fred dying was so sad- quite surprisingly, george survived.  I figured one of the weasley’s wouldn’t make it through the series, but assumed that if it were the twins, it would be both.  Also odd was George marrying Angelina, who I assume was dating Fred, although I don’t think it was ever mentioned in the books.  I’m justing going off of the fact that Fred and Angelina went to the Yule Ball together.

It was always entertaining to see what practical jokes they’d pull, and it turned out that their joke shop was a very successful venture for them.  Like Harry said when he gave the winnings from the TriWizard tournament to the twins, everyone could use a bit of a laugh in such dark times.

On a quick side note: they were absolutely hilarious in the movies.
