Top Ten Worlds I Wouldn’t Want To Live In

This is such a good topic!  Actually, this week, we had a choice of worlds we wouldn’t want to live in or characters we wouldn’t want to trade places with (if we don’t read books set in other worlds), but there are so many worlds I wouldn’t want to live that I decided to go with that option.

  1. Panem from The Hunger Games.  This is most definitely an obvious choice, but I still wouldn’t want to live there.
  2. Wherever A Song Of Fire And Ice is set.  There’s way too much going on in that world, and it doesn’t seem like a pleasant place to live.  Of course, this is based off the first book, because I could barely get through that one, much less the rest of the series.
  3. the U.S. in Delirium.  Because I don’t want surgery to make sure I don’t fall in love.  A world where love is considered a disease is one scary world.
  4. The world of Matched.  I have no desire to see how things turn out in the series after I read the second one ages ago, but I do not want to live in a world where things like music and art are limited to 100 books, and I most certainly do not want to live in a world where my life is completely mapped out.
  5. The world of The Silenced.  The parallels to the Holocaust were kind of scary, and being forced to be the same as everyone else?  Not a world I’d want to live in.
  6. The world of Unwind.  Not just because of the fictional 2nd civil war over reproductive rights, but because you see how both sides of an issue can go totally insane.  And the idea of being unwind?  I wouldn’t want to grow up in a world with that hanging over my head.
  7. Maxwell Academy from Variant.  So, Variant is a world where people are replaced with androids, and you have no idea why, since it’s seems like there are no plans for a third book any time soon.  I would not want to live in fear of becoming a robot or constantly be wondering if people I know are secretly robots.
  8. Pretty much any world Rachel Caine creates.  Because things go to hell in a hand basket pretty fast.  They’re fun to read, but to live in?  Not so much.
  9. The world of the Immortal Rules.  Human are seen as cattle, because vampires have taken over, and they pretty much rule the world, and if you’re not registered…well, you are out of luck.  And I definitely would not want to live in that world.
  10. The world of Divergent.  I really wouldn’t want to live in a world where I had to pick a faction, and then find out everything I’ve ever known is a lie.

Honorable Mentions- More worlds I would not want to live in: the worlds of When She Woke,  the Dire Earth Cycle, Pawn, Inside Out and Sky Jumpers

Top Nine Things On My Reading Wishlist

Here’s what I like about this topic: there are SO MANY THINGS I’d love to see in books, and it was a lot of fun thinking about what I want to see more of in books!

  1. Labelling series!  It’s just annoying when I’m actually looking in Barnes & Noble and I have no clue if it’s part of a series and what number it is.  The downside to not having a smart phone means I have to remember the titles that sound interesting and check when I get home.
  2. More variety in mythology re-tellings.  I can count on one hand the number of re-tellings that are aren’t based in Greek mythology that I’m aware of.  As interesting as it is, authors really could go with any mythology…and yet most re-tellings are Greek mythology.
  3. Both parents in the picture and happily married.  Because I’m started to get tired of the single parent/divorced parents thing in YA.  Some teens do have happily married parents and I have no idea why it’s not more of a thing.  Also, parents who are involved but not too involved.  I don’t know if it’s just the books I’m reading or if it’s considered boring or what, but I’d really like to this one every once in a while.
  4. Speaking of family, can we have more of family actually getting along?  Because I’m pretty sure that there are people out there who actually got along with their siblings and parents, and I feel like that’s not highlighted enough.  A totally perfect relationship isn’t necessary, but getting along is good.
  5. Historical fiction that’s not set in Victorian-era England, the 1920’s or during World War II.  There’s so much to pick from in terms of historical fiction, but I feel like Victorian England, the 2o’s and WWII are really popular.  And there’s nothing wrong with those time periods, but with so much to history to pick from, I’d like to see more variety, instead of the same time periods over and over.
  6. So, those stories where someone dies- usually suicide, but sometimes not- and their former best friend tries to figure out why?  I’d really LOVE for the mystery part to be dropped, because it feels so fake that the former BFF cares now that their former friend is dead.  I feel like there are better ways to show someone coping with the death of a childhood friend.
  7. Less New Adult romance.  There’s nothing wrong with it and I don’t mind reading it once in a blue moon, but I feel like New Adult is so much more than YA with sex.
  8. More self-doubt.  One of the things that really stood out when I was listening to Spell Bound was how Sophie had a moment where she thought she couldn’t save the world because she was just an ordinary teenage girl.  I found that super-interesting and refreshing, and I’d love to see more of it!
  9. More interesting love triangles.  I’m finding that a lot of them are just boring because it’s obvious who the girl is going to pick.  I don’t care if it’s less obvious, or a different shape altogether or even if it’s a guy who’s trying to decide between 2 girls- I just want to see a different variation on the love triangle.

Top Ten 2014 Debuts I’m Looking Forward To

It’s time for 2014 debuts!  There are so many books that look really good, and I definitely have enough books I’m excited about to do at least one more list.  But these are the ten I’m looking forward to the most!

  1. Nuclear Winter by Guy Harrison.  This one looks really good!  It’s post-apocalyptic, and it takes place after World War 3 has ended very, very horribly.  All I know is that Nuclear Winter is coming out sometime this month!
  2. All That Glows by Ryan Graudin.  I LOVE fairies, and the second I saw that it was about fairies, I knew I had to read it!  I can’t wait until next month, when All That Glows comes out!
  3. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge.  I don’t read fairy tale re-tellings very often, but Cruel Beauty seems really interesting!  It’s a re-telling of Beauty and The Beast.  At least it’s coming out in a few weeks, so I won’t have to wait long to read it!
  4. Forget Me Not by Stacey Nash.  I like the idea of a brooch and a necklace working together to essentially make you invisible. And there’s this group who doesn’t want anyone to know about it, and I can’t wait until February 17th to find out why wearing them together is so dangerous!
  5. The Eighth Guardian by Meredith McCardle.  I’m very intrigued by the idea of a test that reveals a secret organization that time travels to change the course of history.  I am definitely looking forward to the expected release date of May 8th.
  6. Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy.  What’s intriguing about this book is that the main character has cancer so she works on her bucket list…only to have her cancer go into remission and faced with the consequences of her bucket list.  I’m looking forward to the March 18th release date.
  7.  Learning Not To Drown by Anna Shinoda.  This book is definitely up my alley.  There seems to be interesting family dynamic, and for some bizarre reason, I’m drawn to books about dsyfunctional families, so I’m definitely looking forward to the April 1st release of this book.
  8. Prisoner Of Night And Fog by Anne Blankman.  As much as I love historical fiction, I don’t read it very often.  But I’m really excited about this book, set in Nazi Germany.  Plus, the main character is the niece of Hitler, which seems like it’ll make this book different from some of the other books set during this time.  I so want it to be April 8th, when this book is expected to be released.
  9. Pandemic by Yvonne Ventresca.  I think books about pandemics are interesting, mostly because I haven’t read many of them.  This one seems particularly interesting, since something’s going on in Lilianna’s life well before disease struck.  May 6th is the expected publication date for Pandemic.
  10. The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings.  The title is definitely interesting, and it was enough for to see what a book called The Murder Complex is about.  It’s this world where the murder rate is higher than than the birthrate, and things ensue when the main character meets a guy who is a programmed assassin for the Murder Complex group that’s running the state of Florida.  I can’t for June 10th, when The Murder Complex is going to be published!

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Goals/Resolutions For 2014

Top Ten Goals/Resolutions For 2014

I can’t believe we’re a week into the new year already!  We could do bookish or non-bookish, and it somehow seems appropriate to do a combination of the two, since there’s a lot I want to do this year!

The Bookish:

  1. Re-read more.  I had this as a goal for 2013, and was good about re-reading books I’ve read since I started blogging back in 2011. But I didn’t re-read any of the print books I have, which was my original goal.  Still, I do want to re-read more this year, because it’s so easy to get caught up in catching up on the new releases.
  2. Read what I have.  With my Nook, it’s super-easy to buy books, and then never read them, so I really want to read the books I have.  At least some of them.  And as a side note, I would like to be a little pickier with the ARC’s I request from netgalley, because it’s super-easy to request books, which leads to requesting too many, and that leads to me feeling overwhelmed by ARC’s.  Basically, I need to pay attention to what I have, and actually reading them.
  3. Listen to more audiobooks.  I’m not the best at actually listening to the books I get through audible, and while I did get a little better with it last year, I really need to go on an audiobook binge this year.  Because they are pretty awesome, and they keep me from going slightly insane during the day.
  4. There are quite a few book-related things that I feel self-conscious about, and I really want to work on that, because I don’t like it, and it makes reading not-so-fun.  I’m hoping to actually talk about some of them this year, so hopefully, that’ll help a little.

The Book Blog-ish:

  1. Stay on top of behind-the-scenes blogging stuff.  Because being behind on stuff is not fun, and it makes my life easier when I stay on top of things.
  2. Writing reviews as soon as I can after finishing the book.  There were points where I got behind on reviews because I didn’t write them right away, and that made reviewing a little more difficult because certain things weren’t fresh in my mind. Writing shorter reviews every once in a while helps…and the possibility of not writing a review every once in a while could be an option this year.
  3. Comment more on posts/be a part of the book blogging community.  I really want to comment more and be a little more involved in the book blogging community, so I will do this!
  4. I want to do add in some personal stuff.  Like, I do book reviews (obviously) and the Top Top Tuesdays and the Gilmore Girls recaps, but I also want to add in some here’s what I’m up to/currently obsessed with-type posts.  Because I used to them, and now I can’t remember the last time I did one, and since I miss doing them, I think it’s time to start doing that again.  At least every once in a while.

The Cliche/Non-Bookish:

  1. Exercise!  I had a bit of a reality check a couple months ago, when I had a physical for work and…and weighed more than I ever expected.  I’m so out of shape that I can only handle 5 or 10 minutes at a time, so baby steps for now! Also: if anyone feels the need to ask me how exercising is going…that’s okay, because I might need someone annoying me with questions about how it’s going.
  2. Try new things with crochet.  I’ve moved past the scarves and coasters part of crochet, but sometimes, patterns scare me. When I try them anyway, they aren’t as hard as they originally seem, and limiting myself because patterns look scary is stupid.

Top Ten Books I Read In 2013

I can’t believe 2013 is almost over!  I’ve read so many good books this year, and these are the ten that stood out as the best of 2013.

  1. If I Stay/Where She Went by Gayle Forman.  I find it so hard to see these books as individual books, but they go so well-together!  The stories are completely amazing and heart-breaking and unforgettable.
  2. Lovely, Dark and Deep by Amy McNamara.  I loved this book so much!  I was still crying a few minutes after finishing it, and there’s some very quiet and reflective and beautiful about this book.
  3. Out Of Breath by Rebecca Donovan.  I was so glad when Out Of Breath came out, because I really wanted to know what was going on in Emma’s life and if she got her happy ending.  I got so invested in her story, and I’m glad she started to make peace with everything that happened in her life.
  4. This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales.  I related to Elise a lot, and I loved seeing Elise find a place where she belonged.
  5. Boundless by Cynthia Hand.  I am such a fan of the Unearthly series, and Boundless was such an amazing end to the series. There was some crying involved and a bit of “oh my god, what just happened, that better be resolved” and said things were resolved to my satisfaction…and this is why I shouldn’t read in public…but Boundless is still one of the best books I’ve read all year.
  6. Mouse Guard: Fall 1152.  This is such an adorable graphic novel, and I love the idea of sword-wielding mice in medieval Europe.
  7. This Much Is True by Katherine Owen.  There was so much angst in this book I wasn’t sure if I was emotionally stable enough to handle it, and it’s quite the emotional roller-coaster, but it was so worth it, because I wanted things to go right for Tally and Lincoln.
  8. A World Away by Nancy Grossman.  This is definitely one of my favorites from this year!  I liked Eliza’s story, but what really made A World Away great was Jessica Lawshe, who narrated the audio book, and was completely amazing!  I liked seeing Eliza in the non-Amish world, and Jessica Lawshe really brought her to life.
  9. Allegiant by Veronica Roth.  I thought Allegiant was a really good ending to the series, and it’s one of my favorite books of the year.  Mostly because of the last few chapters, which I thought were heart-breaking.
  10. Between Shades Of Gray by Ruta Sepetys.  I can’t believe it took me so long to read this one, but I’m glad I finally did!  It was such a great book, and definitely one of the best I’ve read!

And, of course, the books that came so close to making the top ten: Paranormalcy by Kiersten White, Scarlet by Marissa Meyer, With All My Soul by Rachel Vincent, Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson, and Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker.

Top Ten Books I Wouldn’t Mind Santa Bringing Me

I can’t believe Christmas is tomorrow!  These are the books I’m hoping to find under the tree tomorrow morning…

  1. Any of Brian Froud’s books.  I love fairies, and yet, I don’t have any of his books.  So you can’t go wrong with him!
  2. Fruits Basket.  I have the first 15, but I have yet to finish off the rest of the series, so it would be nice to have them so I could finish them!
  3. Harry Potter Page To Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey by Bob McCabe.  It’s Harry Potter-related and what better book to give to a Harry Potter fan than this book?
  4. The Great Encyclopedia Of Fairies by Pierre DuBois.  Again, it’s a great book for someone who loves fairies!
  5. Baking: From My Home To Yours by Dorie Greenspan.  I’ve wanted this one for a while, and I’ve been too lazy to get it. Besides, if someone gets it for me, I will totally bake them things from the book.  So, there’s extra incentive to get it for me!
  6. The Feud by Dean King.  I know the Hatfields and McCoys had this big feud, but I don’t know the story behind it, and I don’t know anything about them, other than the feud they had.  So this book would be a really good choice!
  7. The Complete Book Of Crochet Border Designs by Linda Schapper.  Well, any book on crochet border designs would be nice, as I am going to crochet a blanket one of these days, and it might be nice to have something on borders.
  8. Anne Of Cleves: Henry VIII’s Discarded Bride by Elizabeth Norton.  I haven’t read anything by her yet, but Anne Of Cleves is fascinating, and I’d really like to know more about her.
  9. Bessie Blount: The Story Of Henry VIII’s Longtime Mistress by Elizabeth Norton.  Because I know nothing about her, other than she had an affair with Henry VIII and had an illegitimate son by him, so it would be nice to learn more about her.
  10. Katherine Of Aragon: The Spanish Queen Of Henry VIII by Giles Tremlett.  Okay, third book in a row focusing on the Tudors.  I love this period of history a lot, and given Katherine of Aragon is the wife that we know the most about, this book is a no-brainer!

Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2013

This is going to be a tough one, because a lot of the authors I’ve read this year are not new to me!  Still, I read enough that picking 10 new favorite authors wasn’t too hard.  So here they are!

  1. Gayle Forman.  If I Stay and Where She Went are so freaking awesome, and I am definitely a fan!
  2. Gail Carriger.  I still need to finish her Parasol Protectorate series and I definitely need to read Curtsies and Conspiracies, but I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of her books!
  3. Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.  I love their Beautiful Creatures series, and I’m really looking forward to reading the BC spin-off.  And reading their individual books…
  4. Jennifer Echols.  Such A Rush was so amazing and I felt really connected to Leah.
  5. Michael Glasscock.  I’m really loving his Round Rock series, and I can’t wait to read the other two books in the series.
  6. Beth Revis.  I finally read Across The Universe this year, and I can’t wait to finish the series.
  7. Veronica Rossi.  So…my explanation for Beth Revis also works quite well for Veronica Rossi.
  8. Jason Hough.  Okay, so…I’m really impressed with Jason’s Dire Earth Cycle, and I’m not just saying this because I know him. I’m definitely looking forward to his upcoming books!
  9. Katherine Owen.  The entire time I was reading This Much Is True, I totally felt like I wasn’t emotionally stable enough to read it, but I found that I couldn’t help but want to know what happened next.  I have the feeling I’ll be completely heart-broken when I read her other books, but I don’t freaking care at this point.
  10. Abbi Glines.  Fallen Too Far was such a great read, and after going to a book signing she did with Jamie McGuire and Colleen Hoover, I’m even more of a fan!

Top Ten Books On My Winter To-Read List

So, I kind of suck following through on my seasonal to-read lists, but I’m still hoping that this list will motivate me to work on my TBR pile.  I’m pretty sure that quite a few of these are repeats from previous seasonal lists, and I’m pretty sure I’ll keep talking about how I need to read them…until I actually manage to read them, of course.  Here’s hoping that I manage to read some awesome books over the next few months.

  1. Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare.  I keep telling myself I’m going to read it, and yet I manage to never do it.  I really need to get to it soon.
  2. The Rules For Disappearing by Ashley Elston.  I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while, but I keep getting distracted by other books.
  3. Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi.  Because it was on my fall to-read list, and I never read so, so maybe I’ll manage it this time around.
  4. Between Shades Of Grey by Ruta Sepetys.  Becasue I’ve heard really good things about it, and it looks like something I’d like.
  5. Working Stiff by Rachel Caine.  Because it’s the only series of hers I haven’t read.
  6. Touch Of Power by Maria V. Snyder.  I’ve read all of her other series, so I should probably start reading this one.
  7. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  I can’t remember if this was on my fall to-read list or not, but either way, I really need to read it.  And not just because the movie is coming out…but that is a contributing factor.
  8. Eleanor And Park by Rainbow Rowell.  Because I need to know why people love this book so much.
  9. Splintered by A.J. Howard.  I keep telling myself I’m going to read it someday, now I just need to do!
  10. Code Name Verity.  I feel like this one made my last seasonal to-read list, and naturally, I haven’t read it yet.  I really just need to sit down and read it.

Top Ten 2014 Releases I Am Dying To Read

I can’t believe it’s almost 2014!  This year went by really fast, but it also means that some amazing books are coming out sometime in the next year.  There are so many books I’m looking forward to reading, and while quite a few are the last books in their respective series, I’m still excited to see how things turn out.  And I think it’ll be the reason why I get caught up on the series I need to catch up on.  Here are the books I’m really looking forward to reading!

  1. Cress by Marissa Meyer.  I think I’m looking forward to Cress the most, and February 4 seems so far away.  I’m definitely going to be waiting impatiently for Cress to come out.
  2. Infinite by Jodi Meadows.  Because I’m looking forward to seeing how everything gets wrapped up.  And I want to see life outside of Heart and Range!  At least January 28th isn’t too far away!
  3. Ruin And Rising by Leah Bardugo.  It’s the last Grisha book.  I’m sad that this series will be over, but I also want to know how it all ends.  It’s going to be long wait for June 3.
  4. Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi.  I’m super-excited about Ignite Me, even though I still need to read Unravel Me.  I’m definitely planning to be all caught up by February 4!
  5. Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins.  This series is definitely one of my favorite paranormal series, and while I’m sad to see the series end, I also want to know how it ends.  Like most of the other books on this list.
  6. Dreams Of Gods And Monsters by Laini Taylor.  I still need to read Days Of Blood And Starlight, but I’m still excited about this one.  I’m hoping to be all caught up by April 8, when Dreams Of Gods And Monsters is expected to be released.
  7. Into The Still Blue by Veronica Rossi.  Because it’s Into The Still Blue, and who isn’t excited about it?  I can’t wait until January 28th, when it’s expected to come out!
  8. Dangerous Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.  I got so excited when I heard there was going to be a spin-off of Beautiful Creatures that focuses on Ridley and Link.  Because I’ve always liked their relationship, and it’ll be nice having a series where they take center stage.  I’m definitely looking forward to May 6.
  9. Isla And The Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins.  I LOVED Anna And The French Kiss, and really liked Lola And The Boy Next Door, and I can’t wait to read Isla.  May 13th is the expected release date for Isla, and it seems so far away!
  10. Forever by Karen Ann Hopkins.  I’ve been looking forward to January 28 for a while…because of how Belonging ended.  I just need to know how everything gets resolved!

Top Ten Things I’m Grateful For

Thanksgiving is almost upon those of us in the U.S., and so it’s a great week to talk about what I’m thankful for.  Which I should do more than once a year.  But there really is a lot to be thankful for, whether it’s silly or serious or something in between.

The Random/Silly:

  • Living in San Diego.  So, I am glad to live in a place where it’s sunny for most of the year.  I know a lot of people like seasons, and real weather, instead of the summer and almost-summer that is San Diego…but I’m perfectly fine with year-round sunshine.
  • Music.  Because it makes my day go faster.  Also, I love it when authors talk about music, because it gives me something new to check out.
  • Pinterest.  I spend way too much time on pinterest, and yet I can’t stay away from the endless hours of looking at recipes and craft ideas.
  • NaNoWriMo: Because I need to get those novel ideas out somehow.  And I’ve met some cool people through NaNo.

The Bookish:

  • Goodreads.  I’d be lost without it!
  • The book blogging community.  Because I consider this little piece of the internet my people.  It’s fun to see what other people are reading, and my TBR-pile would be so much shorter without you!
  • Books.  I can’t imagine life without them.  They make real life so much better!

The Traditional:

  • Friends: I have a pretty awesome group of friends, and we have the most random conversations…
  • Family.  I have a pretty cool family…
  • …But I’m especially grateful I grew up with my grandparents, who are like another set of parents to me.  I totally wish I learned how to do crafts from my grandma, and my grandpa is why I love reading as much as I do.
