Top Ten Books I Read In 2013

I can’t believe 2013 is almost over!  I’ve read so many good books this year, and these are the ten that stood out as the best of 2013.

  1. If I Stay/Where She Went by Gayle Forman.  I find it so hard to see these books as individual books, but they go so well-together!  The stories are completely amazing and heart-breaking and unforgettable.
  2. Lovely, Dark and Deep by Amy McNamara.  I loved this book so much!  I was still crying a few minutes after finishing it, and there’s some very quiet and reflective and beautiful about this book.
  3. Out Of Breath by Rebecca Donovan.  I was so glad when Out Of Breath came out, because I really wanted to know what was going on in Emma’s life and if she got her happy ending.  I got so invested in her story, and I’m glad she started to make peace with everything that happened in her life.
  4. This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales.  I related to Elise a lot, and I loved seeing Elise find a place where she belonged.
  5. Boundless by Cynthia Hand.  I am such a fan of the Unearthly series, and Boundless was such an amazing end to the series. There was some crying involved and a bit of “oh my god, what just happened, that better be resolved” and said things were resolved to my satisfaction…and this is why I shouldn’t read in public…but Boundless is still one of the best books I’ve read all year.
  6. Mouse Guard: Fall 1152.  This is such an adorable graphic novel, and I love the idea of sword-wielding mice in medieval Europe.
  7. This Much Is True by Katherine Owen.  There was so much angst in this book I wasn’t sure if I was emotionally stable enough to handle it, and it’s quite the emotional roller-coaster, but it was so worth it, because I wanted things to go right for Tally and Lincoln.
  8. A World Away by Nancy Grossman.  This is definitely one of my favorites from this year!  I liked Eliza’s story, but what really made A World Away great was Jessica Lawshe, who narrated the audio book, and was completely amazing!  I liked seeing Eliza in the non-Amish world, and Jessica Lawshe really brought her to life.
  9. Allegiant by Veronica Roth.  I thought Allegiant was a really good ending to the series, and it’s one of my favorite books of the year.  Mostly because of the last few chapters, which I thought were heart-breaking.
  10. Between Shades Of Gray by Ruta Sepetys.  I can’t believe it took me so long to read this one, but I’m glad I finally did!  It was such a great book, and definitely one of the best I’ve read!

And, of course, the books that came so close to making the top ten: Paranormalcy by Kiersten White, Scarlet by Marissa Meyer, With All My Soul by Rachel Vincent, Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson, and Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker.

Top Ten Books I Wouldn’t Mind Santa Bringing Me

I can’t believe Christmas is tomorrow!  These are the books I’m hoping to find under the tree tomorrow morning…

  1. Any of Brian Froud’s books.  I love fairies, and yet, I don’t have any of his books.  So you can’t go wrong with him!
  2. Fruits Basket.  I have the first 15, but I have yet to finish off the rest of the series, so it would be nice to have them so I could finish them!
  3. Harry Potter Page To Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey by Bob McCabe.  It’s Harry Potter-related and what better book to give to a Harry Potter fan than this book?
  4. The Great Encyclopedia Of Fairies by Pierre DuBois.  Again, it’s a great book for someone who loves fairies!
  5. Baking: From My Home To Yours by Dorie Greenspan.  I’ve wanted this one for a while, and I’ve been too lazy to get it. Besides, if someone gets it for me, I will totally bake them things from the book.  So, there’s extra incentive to get it for me!
  6. The Feud by Dean King.  I know the Hatfields and McCoys had this big feud, but I don’t know the story behind it, and I don’t know anything about them, other than the feud they had.  So this book would be a really good choice!
  7. The Complete Book Of Crochet Border Designs by Linda Schapper.  Well, any book on crochet border designs would be nice, as I am going to crochet a blanket one of these days, and it might be nice to have something on borders.
  8. Anne Of Cleves: Henry VIII’s Discarded Bride by Elizabeth Norton.  I haven’t read anything by her yet, but Anne Of Cleves is fascinating, and I’d really like to know more about her.
  9. Bessie Blount: The Story Of Henry VIII’s Longtime Mistress by Elizabeth Norton.  Because I know nothing about her, other than she had an affair with Henry VIII and had an illegitimate son by him, so it would be nice to learn more about her.
  10. Katherine Of Aragon: The Spanish Queen Of Henry VIII by Giles Tremlett.  Okay, third book in a row focusing on the Tudors.  I love this period of history a lot, and given Katherine of Aragon is the wife that we know the most about, this book is a no-brainer!

Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2013

This is going to be a tough one, because a lot of the authors I’ve read this year are not new to me!  Still, I read enough that picking 10 new favorite authors wasn’t too hard.  So here they are!

  1. Gayle Forman.  If I Stay and Where She Went are so freaking awesome, and I am definitely a fan!
  2. Gail Carriger.  I still need to finish her Parasol Protectorate series and I definitely need to read Curtsies and Conspiracies, but I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of her books!
  3. Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.  I love their Beautiful Creatures series, and I’m really looking forward to reading the BC spin-off.  And reading their individual books…
  4. Jennifer Echols.  Such A Rush was so amazing and I felt really connected to Leah.
  5. Michael Glasscock.  I’m really loving his Round Rock series, and I can’t wait to read the other two books in the series.
  6. Beth Revis.  I finally read Across The Universe this year, and I can’t wait to finish the series.
  7. Veronica Rossi.  So…my explanation for Beth Revis also works quite well for Veronica Rossi.
  8. Jason Hough.  Okay, so…I’m really impressed with Jason’s Dire Earth Cycle, and I’m not just saying this because I know him. I’m definitely looking forward to his upcoming books!
  9. Katherine Owen.  The entire time I was reading This Much Is True, I totally felt like I wasn’t emotionally stable enough to read it, but I found that I couldn’t help but want to know what happened next.  I have the feeling I’ll be completely heart-broken when I read her other books, but I don’t freaking care at this point.
  10. Abbi Glines.  Fallen Too Far was such a great read, and after going to a book signing she did with Jamie McGuire and Colleen Hoover, I’m even more of a fan!

Top Ten Books On My Winter To-Read List

So, I kind of suck following through on my seasonal to-read lists, but I’m still hoping that this list will motivate me to work on my TBR pile.  I’m pretty sure that quite a few of these are repeats from previous seasonal lists, and I’m pretty sure I’ll keep talking about how I need to read them…until I actually manage to read them, of course.  Here’s hoping that I manage to read some awesome books over the next few months.

  1. Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare.  I keep telling myself I’m going to read it, and yet I manage to never do it.  I really need to get to it soon.
  2. The Rules For Disappearing by Ashley Elston.  I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while, but I keep getting distracted by other books.
  3. Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi.  Because it was on my fall to-read list, and I never read so, so maybe I’ll manage it this time around.
  4. Between Shades Of Grey by Ruta Sepetys.  Becasue I’ve heard really good things about it, and it looks like something I’d like.
  5. Working Stiff by Rachel Caine.  Because it’s the only series of hers I haven’t read.
  6. Touch Of Power by Maria V. Snyder.  I’ve read all of her other series, so I should probably start reading this one.
  7. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  I can’t remember if this was on my fall to-read list or not, but either way, I really need to read it.  And not just because the movie is coming out…but that is a contributing factor.
  8. Eleanor And Park by Rainbow Rowell.  Because I need to know why people love this book so much.
  9. Splintered by A.J. Howard.  I keep telling myself I’m going to read it someday, now I just need to do!
  10. Code Name Verity.  I feel like this one made my last seasonal to-read list, and naturally, I haven’t read it yet.  I really just need to sit down and read it.

Top Ten 2014 Releases I Am Dying To Read

I can’t believe it’s almost 2014!  This year went by really fast, but it also means that some amazing books are coming out sometime in the next year.  There are so many books I’m looking forward to reading, and while quite a few are the last books in their respective series, I’m still excited to see how things turn out.  And I think it’ll be the reason why I get caught up on the series I need to catch up on.  Here are the books I’m really looking forward to reading!

  1. Cress by Marissa Meyer.  I think I’m looking forward to Cress the most, and February 4 seems so far away.  I’m definitely going to be waiting impatiently for Cress to come out.
  2. Infinite by Jodi Meadows.  Because I’m looking forward to seeing how everything gets wrapped up.  And I want to see life outside of Heart and Range!  At least January 28th isn’t too far away!
  3. Ruin And Rising by Leah Bardugo.  It’s the last Grisha book.  I’m sad that this series will be over, but I also want to know how it all ends.  It’s going to be long wait for June 3.
  4. Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi.  I’m super-excited about Ignite Me, even though I still need to read Unravel Me.  I’m definitely planning to be all caught up by February 4!
  5. Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins.  This series is definitely one of my favorite paranormal series, and while I’m sad to see the series end, I also want to know how it ends.  Like most of the other books on this list.
  6. Dreams Of Gods And Monsters by Laini Taylor.  I still need to read Days Of Blood And Starlight, but I’m still excited about this one.  I’m hoping to be all caught up by April 8, when Dreams Of Gods And Monsters is expected to be released.
  7. Into The Still Blue by Veronica Rossi.  Because it’s Into The Still Blue, and who isn’t excited about it?  I can’t wait until January 28th, when it’s expected to come out!
  8. Dangerous Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.  I got so excited when I heard there was going to be a spin-off of Beautiful Creatures that focuses on Ridley and Link.  Because I’ve always liked their relationship, and it’ll be nice having a series where they take center stage.  I’m definitely looking forward to May 6.
  9. Isla And The Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins.  I LOVED Anna And The French Kiss, and really liked Lola And The Boy Next Door, and I can’t wait to read Isla.  May 13th is the expected release date for Isla, and it seems so far away!
  10. Forever by Karen Ann Hopkins.  I’ve been looking forward to January 28 for a while…because of how Belonging ended.  I just need to know how everything gets resolved!

Top Ten Things I’m Grateful For

Thanksgiving is almost upon those of us in the U.S., and so it’s a great week to talk about what I’m thankful for.  Which I should do more than once a year.  But there really is a lot to be thankful for, whether it’s silly or serious or something in between.

The Random/Silly:

  • Living in San Diego.  So, I am glad to live in a place where it’s sunny for most of the year.  I know a lot of people like seasons, and real weather, instead of the summer and almost-summer that is San Diego…but I’m perfectly fine with year-round sunshine.
  • Music.  Because it makes my day go faster.  Also, I love it when authors talk about music, because it gives me something new to check out.
  • Pinterest.  I spend way too much time on pinterest, and yet I can’t stay away from the endless hours of looking at recipes and craft ideas.
  • NaNoWriMo: Because I need to get those novel ideas out somehow.  And I’ve met some cool people through NaNo.

The Bookish:

  • Goodreads.  I’d be lost without it!
  • The book blogging community.  Because I consider this little piece of the internet my people.  It’s fun to see what other people are reading, and my TBR-pile would be so much shorter without you!
  • Books.  I can’t imagine life without them.  They make real life so much better!

The Traditional:

  • Friends: I have a pretty awesome group of friends, and we have the most random conversations…
  • Family.  I have a pretty cool family…
  • …But I’m especially grateful I grew up with my grandparents, who are like another set of parents to me.  I totally wish I learned how to do crafts from my grandma, and my grandpa is why I love reading as much as I do.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I’d Recommend To People New To YA

Top Ten Books I’d Recommend To People New To YA

I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while, so this is the perfect time to actually do it.  One day, I might even get around to putting together an expanded list, but for now, this is definitely a good start.  It’s no secret I love YA, and so it seemed like a good chance to talk about some of the great YA books out there.  I’ve decided to leave off some of the more obvious choices in favor of some books that are equally as awesome as the Harry Potter and The Fault In Our Stars of the world.

Contemporary:

  1. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson.  I love Laurie Halse Anderson so much, and if I have to recommend just one book by her, Speak is it.  She has a way of making you relate to the characters, even when what they were experiencing is so completely different than anything you’ve been through.
  2. Hate List by Jennifer Brown.  I can’t recommend this book enough, and it’s a haunting look at a school shooting and its aftermath.

Paranormal:

  1. The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa: I love her take on fairies, and how some fairies have come out of technology.
  2. Wings by Aprilynne Pike.  This is another book that has a great take on fairies.  These fairies are more plant-like, and are grouped according to seasons.  And they even bloom once a year!
  3. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White.  I love that Paranormalcy has a lot of different elements of a lot of paranormal books out there.  And Evie is just hilarious.

Dystopic & Science Fiction:

  1. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.  I LOVE this trilogy and I really wish it got the attention some of the other dystopic trilogies got. I liked how Tally managed to overcome every surgery performed on her.
  2. The Adoration Of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson.  I liked that it’s about the ethics of science and medicine and when things go a bit too far.  There are two very different sides, and I like that Pearson doesn’t take a side.

Fantasy:

  1. Graceling by Kristin Cashore.  I really liked this world, and how people with really special abilities were shunned and exploited and feared.
  2. Crewel by Gennifer Albin.  I love that there is a group of women who can weave time, and I love that it’s a fantasy novel with some elements that seem science-fictiony.

Historical Fiction:

  1. Witch Child by Celia Rees.  Witch Child is pretty awesome, and I like how it’s told in diary format.  I also liked her escape to America to escape accusations of being a witch.  Plus, it’s hard (for me) to find historical fiction at the upper end of YA, so this is a great choice.
  2. Gilt by Katherine Longshore.  I love that this book focuses on Katherine Howard (better known as Henry VIII’s 5th wife) and her circle of friends.  This is a great addition to YA historical fiction.

Top Ten Covers I Wish I Could Redesign

Since I’m a mostly e-book/audiobook person, I don’t pay attention to covers most of the time.  When I add them to my reviews? That’s probably the only time I look at the cover, but I always manage to find a few that I wish were really different.  Here are my picks for covers that need to be redesigned.

Redesigned Covers

  1. Darkness Falls by Jessica Sorensen.  Overall, it’s just a bit too dark, and it needs a little bit of contrast in terms of colors.
  2. Bellman & Black by Diane Setterfield.  Because I’m not quite sure what’s going on in the cover.  It feels a little too cluttered to me.
  3. Cobweb Bride by Vera Nazarian.  I like  the book but the statue looking female needs to go.  Seriously.  That’s the only thing wrong with the cover.
  4. Every Day by David Levithan.  That random white strip towards the left needs to go away.  It makes me feel like something when wrong when the cover was being worked and they forgot to fix it.
  5. Seduction by M.J. Rose.  I don’t like the colors.  Also, I don’t like that you don’t see her eyes.  Half-faces are kind of annoying.
  6. Insomnia by J.R. Johansson.  The stuff on the guys face?  Kind of random.  Seriously, what is that?
  7. If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch.  Um, the girl is really creepy, especially the way she’s staring right at you with big eyes. This is one case where I’m glad I don’t have to look at that cover.
  8. Sky Jumpers by Peggy Eddleman.  One, the colors NEED to be different.  And: I know what this scene is supposed to be, but it needs to be different.  It’s just not how I pictured it to look.
  9. Contagious by Emily Goodwin.  I don’t particularly like her pose.  And more importantly, I would change her outfit…mostly because that seems like a really bad outfit to wear during the Zombie Apocalypse.
  10. Anna And The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins.  I LOVE Anna And The French Kiss.  But why is Etienne not on the cover? Because I would totally put him on the cover.  I don’t get why we only see his arm.

Top Ten Sequels I Can’t Wait To Get My Hands On

There are so many sequels that I really need to catch up on, and even more that I’m looking forward to reading when they come out! Picking just 10 is going to be really hard this week, and I don’t know if it’s good or bad that I’m reading so many different series that picking 10 sequels is no problem and yet so hard.

  1. Daylighters by Rachel Caine.  I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while, and I can’t wait to see how it all ends.
  2. Cress/Winter by Marissa Meyer.  I feel like the inclusion of these two books are explanation enough.
  3. Unravel Me/Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi.  I still need to read Unravel Me, but I’m looking forward to reading both Unravel Me and
  4. Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins.   I love this series, and I need to know what happens now…April seems so far away.
  5. A Radiant Sky by Jocelyn Davies.  I so need to know how things turn out for Skye.
  6. Seeing Light by Michelle Warren.  I’m hoping all of the questions I have will be answered in Seeing Light.
  7. Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers.  Because I still haven’t read it, and I really should read it soon…
  8. Forever by Karen Ann Hopkins.  Because the thing that happened at the end of Temptation?  I need to know how that gets resolved!
  9. Ruin And Rising by Leigh Bardugo.  Because it’s the last book in the Grisha Trilogy.
  10. Dreams Of Gods & Monsters by Laini Taylor.  It’s the last book in the Daughter Of Smoke And Bone series, how could I not want to read it?

Top Ten Scary Covers/Halloween Reads

This week is all about Halloween.  Which is a totally great holiday!  We actually have our choice of best books to read for Halloween or the scariest covers, and I thought it would be fun to split it in half.  So, I don’t pay much attention to book covers these days, and while there aren’t any that I find particularly scary, there are quite a few that I find really creepy!  And there are so many good books to read that are really creepy or just really good to read this time of year.

The Books:

  1. Pretty much anything by Stephen King.  He writes some great stuff that’s perfect to get into the Halloween spirit.  If I had to pick, I think I’d go with It, because it’s super-creepy!
  2. The Storycatcher by Ann Hite.  The Storycatcher has a very creepy/gothic vibe that’s perfect for Halloween.
  3. Variant by Robison Wells.  This is a great Halloween read because there’s something creepy about Maxfield Academy and the lack of adults and the mysterious powers that be that are controlling things.
  4. This Is Not A Test by Courtney Summers.  Another zombie apocalypse novel, and the creepiness is that the zombies are hovering in the background, and you’re never sure when they’re going to pop up.
  5. Harry Potter.  I have no idea why, but this is my favorite time of year to re-read the series.

The Covers:

TTT 5 Creepy Covers
