Top Ten Books About Friendship

This week’s list is all about friendship, which is pretty awesome!  Sometimes, friendships are my favorite part of whatever book I’m reading, and I think I’ve put together a pretty great list of books that have some awesome friendships!

  1. My Best Friend, Maybe by Caela Carter.  I just finished the ARC, and it’s one of the first books I thought of.  I really liked seeing how former best friends sort of became friends again.
  2. Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi.  I love the friendship that Roar and Aria have, and it’s one of my favorite things about this entire series.
  3. Harry Potter.  There are many amazing things about Harry Potter, and there are so many awesome friendships in the book.  From the Marauders to the DA to Harry, Ron and Hermione…friends are definitely important!
  4. the Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine.  This series is about all sorts of things, but I love the friendships between Eve, Michael, Claire and Shane.
  5. The Sweet Trilogy by Wendy Higgins.  I love how Anna and her group of friends came together to do what they needed to do.
  6. Incarnate by Jodi Meadows.  I just love how Ana found some awesome friends who accepted her even though she wasn’t like everyone else.
  7. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi.  I know this book has all kinds of things going on but I love the friendship that Juliette and Kenji have.
  8. This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales.  I love that Elise and Vicky become such good friends by the end of the book.
  9. Soulless by Gail Carriger.  Ivy and Alexia as best friends crack me up.  As do Alexia and Lord Akeldama.
  10. Ten Tiny Breaths/One Tiny Lie by K.A. Tucker.  Livie and and Kasey are sisters, but they’re also really close and seem to be best friends.  Which is totally awesome.

Top Ten Books I Almost Put Down But Didn’t

I like this topic!  Granted, I could only come up with 9 because honestly?  For the most part, I couldn’t remember a lot of the books I may have wanted to DNF at one point.  Still, I managed to come up with almost a full list, and I’m really glad I read these books to the end!

  1. Daughter Of Smoke And Bone by Laini Taylor.  I’m really glad I didn’t give up on this one!  It was hard getting through the first chapters, but I’m glad I stuck with it, because this one interesting book!
  2. Soulless by Gail Carriger.  It took me a couple tries to actually get through Soulless!  The first time, I read it, and put it down, because I wasn’t interested.  But I tried listening to the audio book a few months later, and I have since enjoyed the hilarity that is Alexia Tarabotti.
  3. The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.  When I first read Vampire Academy, I thought it was okay.  But after seeing the movie, I decided to give the series another chance…and I’m glad I did because Rose did get a lot more tolerable as the series went on.
  4. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge.  When I first reading this one, I almost put it down because I didn’t feel smart enough for it.  I really felt like I was missing some essential piece of history that would help me understand the book better.  But it’s a really interesting take on Beauty And The Beast, and I’m glad I stuck with it.
  5. The Rise And The Fall Of The Third Reich by William Shirer.  So, I decided that listening to the audio book would be a really good idea for this book.  I mean, it’s 57 hours long, and I felt like I really accomplished something by finishing it.
  6. The Pact by Jodi Picoult.  It’s rare for me to talk about books from my pre-book blogging days, but I knew I had to include this one!  There was a point where I just wasn’t able to handle it emotionally, so I put it down, took a break from it, and eventually picked it back up to finish it.
  7. Drowning Instinct by Ilsa Bick.  At one point, I downloaded a sample chapter of Drowning Instinct, and realized that it’s a book that needs to be listened to, and not read.  I like that Jenna’s narrating her story into a recorder, but if I had to read her speaking into something…let’s just say I wouldn’t have finished this book.
  8. The Help by Kathryn Stockett.  I almost put The Help down because I just wasn’t into it at first.  But I stuck with it, and found myself getting pulled into the story.
  9. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  It took me a while to get into The Night Circus but I’m glad I didn’t put down this magical book!

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Book Covers I’d Love To Have As Art

Top Ten Book Covers I’d Love To Have Framed As Art

There are some really interesting, amazing, beautiful book covers out there, and it be be amazing to have them hanging around the house.  And while there are some great covers out there, some definitely work better as framed art than others. So here are my (11!) picks for covers I’d love to have frame as art.

Covers As Art 1

  • Cruel Beauty by Rosmund Hodges.  There’s just something about the red and black that make this cover eye-catching.
  • Queen Of Hearts by Colleen Oakes.  I don’t know why I want this framed as art, but I think this would be awesome framed and hanging up.
  • Wild Awake by Hilary Smith.  While I thought Wild Awake was okay, I can’t help but want the cover framed.  I just love the colors and how vibrant it is!

Covers As Art 2

  • Lovely, Dark and Deep by Amy McNamara.  I love the colors.  Plus, there’s something about the snow and the tree that’s absolutely beautiful.
  • That Time I Joined The Circus by A.G. Howard.  I love the colors and the lights and everything going on in the cover.
  • Anna And The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins.  We’re talking the redesigned one, which is actually really pretty. Pretty enough to be frame and on a wall somewhere in my house!

Covers As Art 3

  • Seeing Light by Michelle Warren.  All of the covers in this series would be awesome as framed art, but this cover is my favorite in the series.
  • The Unearthly Series by Cynthia Hand.  They’re all so pretty that I honestly can’t pick which one I’d want.  Besides, they’d look great as a collage.

Covers As Art 4

  • Wild Children by Richard Roberts.  This is another cover that’s different, but it’s also a different I want hanging on my wall.
  • Crash by Nicole Williams.  There’s just something about the ballerina on a hardwood floor next to what appears to be Converse.
  • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  Because I couldn’t help but include an 11th cover!  The Night Circus is a magical, dreamy book, and the cover goes so well with that!

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books If You Like Once Upon A Time

Top Ten Books If You Like Once Upon A Time

I love the idea of recommending books based on a t.v. show or movie or play or some other form of non-bookish entertainment.  One of my favorite shows right now is Once Upon A Time, which is getting so, so good!  I thought about including other t.v. shows, but…I really love Once Upon A Time, and since I had no problem coming up with 10 book recommendations, I figured I go with it!

  1. The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa.  If you like how fairy-tales are slightly twisted on Once Upon A Time, you’ll like what Kagawa does with fairies and the Nevernever and how some fairies have evolved to be Iron fairies.
  2. A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle.  This might be odd, but something about Emma makes me think of Meg.
  3. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  This is one interesting circus, and all of the different storylines make me think of how Once Upon A Time is told.
  4. Wildwood Dancing by Juliette Marillier.  Something about this world makes me think of the world Once Upon A Time is set in.
  5. Graceling by Kristin Cashore.  Something about the world Graceling is set in makes me think of Fairy Tale Land.
  6. If, for some reason, you haven’t read Cinder by Marissa Meyer, then you definitely should.  Talk about a different way to tell a fairy-tale!
  7. Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers.  I think assassin nuns would fit in well in the Once Upon A Time universe.  And something about the world of Grace Mercy makes me think of Fairy Tale Land.
  8. Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson.  It’s such a good re-telling of Peter Pan, and now that I’m thinking about it, I’m curious about how Tiger Lily herself would fit in to the Neverland in Once Upon A Time.
  9. Poison Study by Maria Snyder.  I love the relationships in this series the way I love the relationships between everyone in Once Upon A Time.
  10. Queen Of Hearts by Colleen Oakes is great for people who loved Once Upon A Time In Wonderland.  Weird things are going to be happening in Wonderland, so it’s a great book for people who both Wonderland and Once Upon A Time.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Characters I Would Love To Be Friends With

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely folks over at The Broke And The Bookish.  Every week, bloggers from all over share their own top ten list based on the topic of the week.  You can find all Top Ten Tuesdays here.

Top Ten Characters Who…I Would Love To Be Friends With

I kind of love these fill-in-the-blank topics, where we get to pick our top ten books in x genre or all of the other ones that have been done.  There are so many characters I’d love to be friends with, and I could go on and on about which characters would be awesome friends, but I somehow manage to narrow it down to ten!

  1. Hermione from Harry Potter.  Because we all need a Hermione in our lives.
  2. And…everyone also needs a Luna!  I just love how eccentric Luna is, and how okay she is with herself.
  3. Evie from Paranormalcy.  She seems like she’d be fun to hang out with, and I’m sure we’d bond over all things pink and sparkly…and awesome t.v, of course.
  4. Cath from Fangirl.  I think we’d be great friends, and we could even write fanfiction together!  We have a lot in common.
  5. Ana from Incarnate.  Because she really needs a friend, and I’d just want her to know she has a friend in me.
  6. Sophie from Hex Hall.  She’s pretty sarcastic, and I think she’d be a fun person to be friends with.
  7. Joanne from Weather Wardens.  She’d be a great person to shop with, and I could totally use her fashion advice. Assuming, of course, that nothing weird is going on with the weather…which isn’t likely, considering it’s Joanne.
  8. Eliza from A World Away.  I’m pretty sure we’d be good friends, assuming we’d actually cross paths.  Which probably isn’t going to happen, considering she’s Amish.  But you never know!
  9. Alexia from Soulless.  She’s hysterical, but I’d also love to have tea with her.
  10. Anna from Sweet Evil.  I have no clue why I’d love to be friends with her but she seems like a pretty awesome person, and I think we’d get along really well.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Bookish Things I Want To Own

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely folks over at The Broke And The Bookish.  Every week, bloggers from all over share their own top ten list based on the topic of the week.  You can find all Top Ten Tuesdays here.

Top Ten Bookish Things (That Aren’t Books) That I Want To Own

Okay, so, bookish things that aren’t books that I want to own…it’s not something I think about.  As much as I love books, I don’t pay any attention to the non-bookish things I could own.  With the help of pinterest and etsy however, I managed to find quite a few things that look completely awesome.  All pictures and links will take you to etsy or pinterest!

  • I’ve always wanted a Hufflepuff scarf, and considering I crochet, it wouldn’t be that hard to make a scarf.
  • I’ve seen a lot of awesome reading spaces/bookshelves on pinterest, and while I don’t think I’ve pinned any of them, I want some awesome looking bookshelves some day.

I love these coasters, found in Oh Gaud’s etsy shop.

  • I really need these Harry Potter coasters.  They’re chapter coasters!  With the chapter illustrations! Could I have regular coasters?  Of course, but they’re not the same as Harry Potter chapter coasters!
  • I came across this one shop on Etsy when I saw a Harry Potter charm bracelet that has all 7 books as the charms.  It looks like she has all sorts of book charm bracelets, and they look pretty awesome.

Accio Energy mug found on etsy, in Thristers shop!

Espresso Patronum mug, found in TooLegitTooKnit’s etsy shop

  • I also like this other mug with the grim on the inside.  I just love the idea of grim “tea leaves” on the bottom of a mug.
  • And this other shop I came across has really cool Harry Potter and Hunger Games inspired jewelry.

Really cool book page pendants, found in OwlsNestCottage’s etsy shop

Found on etsy, from PendantLab’s esty shop

  • And this owl pendant also found on etsy.  Mostly because it reminds me of Hedwig.

The Alohomora Deskpig Shirt, found in the Alohomora store

  • Is it weird that I want a deskpig shirt?  Because that would be awesome!

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Most Unique Books I’ve Read

Top Ten Most Unique Books I’ve Read

There are so many things that make books special, and some stand out for so many different reasons.  Some are unique because of the characters, others are unique because of the settings, and a few are even unique because of what it’s about. No matter why a book is unique, these are the ten that stand out because of how awesomely different they are!

  1. Evie from Paranormalcy.  One of my favorite things about this series that Evie is a pink, sparkly person who is full of awesome and kick-assery.  It’s one of my favorite combinations.
  2. Temptation by Karen Ann Hopkins.  I like that it’s an Amish guy because almost everything else I’ve read that has someone who’s Amish has been a teenage girl.  So it’s nice to see an Amish guy for once.
  3. Witchstruck by Victoria Lamb.  I like that the main character is a witch, and that conflict between Elizabeth and Mary is minimal.
  4. Between Shades Of Grey by Ruta Sepetys.  It’s WW2 historical fiction that doesn’t focus on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.  It’s nice to read a book set during WW2 that focuses on a part that doesn’t seem to be talked about a lot.
  5. Eon by Alison Goodman.  It’s fantasy that’s not reminiscent of medieval Europe.  I know fantasy and medieval Europe are BFF’s, but honestly, I find it kind of tired, and so it’s nice to see a fantasy novel not in a medieval Europe-type of society.
  6. A Moment Comes by Jennifer Bradbury.  It’s about the partition of India, which I didn’t even know was an actual event until I read this book!  Basically, it led to India and Pakistan being two separate countries, and the book focuses on three very different teens who are affected by it.  I really love it when historical fiction focuses on something I know nothing about.
  7. Shadow And Bone by Leah Bardugo.  I like that Shadow And Bone makes me think of Russia, and not medieval Europe.  For some reason, non-European fantasy settings intrigue me.
  8. Tiger’s Curse by Colleen Houck.  For me, Tiger’s Curse was just okay, but what’s unique about it is that it focuses on Indian mythology.  It’s such a nice change from Greek mythology!
  9. Exposed by Kimberly Marcus.  I found Exposed to be interesting and unique because it’s narrated by a girl caught between her brother and her best friend, when her best friend accuses her brother of rape.
  10. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa.  I just love what she did with fairies in this series, and how there are fairies who have changed to be okay with being around iron.  She made fairies so interesting and awesome and different.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Gateway Books And Authors On My Reading Journey

Top Ten Gateway Books & Authors On My Reading Journey

So many books and authors are really important to me- some I keep going back to, because they’re comforting, and others got me into a genre I really like.  My reading journey wouldn’t be complete without them!

Books:
  1. Harry Potter.  I doubt it’s a surprise to anyone who’s met me or to anyone who’s read more than a few of my other top ten Tuesday lists.  Harry Potter is the one series that I can read over and over and never get tired of, and it’s really the only fandom I consider myself to be a part of.  The words I would need to explain how much Harry Potter means to me don’t seem adequate enough.
  2. Twilight.  I love me something paranormal, and Twilight is a huge reason why.  I went through the series so fast, and even though I haven’t read it in forever, it’s still the reason why I love paranormal so much.
  3. The Hunger Games is what got me into YA.  Like, really into YA.  I read a little bit of it before then, but it really is the pivotal gateway YA book for me.
  4. Pride And Prejudice sparked my interest in classics.  Granted, I don’t read a lot of classics, but it is the classic that got me to be more open to reading them in the first place.  I don’t even remember what got me to pick up Pride And Prejudice in the first place, but I got it, read it, and was hooked!
  5. Fruits Basket is what got me into the manga I keep meaning to read but somehow never manage to do.  Still, I’m 100% positive I wouldn’t even be interested in manga if it weren’t for Fruits  Basket.
Authors:
  1. Laurie Halse Anderson.  I love her so much, and I still remember reading Speak back in high school, and it’s stayed with me for ten years.  Her books have a way of making me feel like everything is going to be okay, no matter what’s going on.  She’s definitely one of the many reasons why I love YA.
  2. Alison Weir.  She’s my go-to for Tudor non-fiction.  While I really should start reading books written by people who aren’t Weir, I think she’ll always be the one I go back to when I want to read anything having to do with the Tudors.
  3. Mary Roach.  I’ve listened to a couple of her books recently, and I’m not super-into science, but I think she’s going to be my gateway into fun and quirky books about science.  Because she makes it fun and interesting!
  4. Philippa Gregory is definitely the author who got me into historical fiction.  There’s something about her books that make me want to keep reading!
  5. Rachel Caine.  To be honest, I’m not quite sure why Caine makes the cut, but she does.  I think it’s because she does slightly different things in the paranormal genre, and makes it fun.  I’ve never even considered adult paranormal romance until I started reading Rachel Caine, and now I can’t wait to see what else is out there.  She’s also one of the big reasons why I love paranormal so much!

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Things On My Bookish Bucket List

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely folks over at The Broke And The Bookish.  Every week, bloggers from all over share their own top ten list based on the topic of the week.  You can find all Top Ten Tuesdays here.

Top Ten Things On My Bookish Bucket List

I’m not really the type of person who’s into bucket lists, but the idea of a bookish one is intriguing!  I’ve never considered the idea of a bookish bucket list, because they’re not two things I would associate together.  Still, it’s fun to think about the bookish things I want to do!

  1. Go to BEA.  I’ve seen so many people talk about that it makes me want to go!
  2. Also: I have friends who keep telling me I would love the L.A. Times Festival Of Books, and I’m actually going to it this year, so I’ll be crossing it off the list next month!  Do you know what will happen if I don’t get to see John Green talk?  Very bad things.
  3. Meeting J.K. Rowling would be amazing…even though it’s unlikely to happen, it would be completely awesome to meet someone I really admire.  I can’t imagine my life without Harry Potter.
  4. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who wants to have a library in wherever I live.  It’s totally not going to happen in the foreseeable future, and one of the reasons why I love my Nook is that I have to keep my print books contained to a really small area…but at least I’ll have a really good idea of what books will go into that small reading area whenever it happens!
  5. The Jane Austen Society Of North America has an annual general meeting that has all sorts of interesting workshops and stuff…including a regency ball that sounds really fun!  I think you have to be a member to go (which I currently am not) but either way, it sounds fun and different.
  6. I keep telling myself I’m going to read banned books during Banned Books Week.  I’m pretty sure quite a few books I’ve read over the last few years have been challenged or banned, but I like the idea of doing something during Banned Books Week.
  7. World Book Night also seems interesting, and participating in some way would be fun.
  8. Keep blogging!  I love being able to talk about what I’m reading, and I hope to do it for a long time!
  9. I really need to be part of a YA book club.  Like, I know Forever Young Adult has book clubs, but I always forget to check it out, even though I keep meaning to.
  10. And I really need to go to the Wizarding World Of Harry Potter.  I’ve wanted to go since I first heard about it ages ago, and it’ll happen one day!

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books On My Spring To Read List

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely folks over at The Broke And The Bookish.  Every week, bloggers from all over share their own top ten list based on the topic of the week.  You can find all Top Ten Tuesdays here.

Top Ten Books On My Spring To Read List

I can’t believe it’s time to think about what I want to read this spring!  Here’s what I feel like reading over the next few months!

  1. Splintered by A.G. Howard.  I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while, and I’m kind of into Alice In Wonderland re-tellings after reading Queen Of Hearts recently, so maybe it’s time to read it!
  2. Counting Backwards by Laura Lascarso.  I’ve been in a YA contemporary mood lately, and Counting Backwards seems to fit my mood.
  3. Sweet  Reckoning by Wendy Higgins.  I’ve really liked this series, and I can’t wait to read the last book in the series when it comes out next month.
  4. Destroy Me & Fracture Me by Tahereh Mafi.  I feel like I need to read these 2 novellas so I understand the Warner/Adam stuff better.
  5. Seeing Light by Michelle Warren.  So I can see how this interesting paranormal trilogy ends.
  6. A Million Suns by Beth Revis.  No reason, I just want to read it soon.
  7. Through The Ever Night by Veronica Rossi.  Another one I just feel like reading soon.
  8. The Monuments Men by Robert Edsel.  After seeing the movie, I feel inspired to read the book.
  9. Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson.  Because it’s her only YA book I haven’t read yet.
  10. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.  I’m definitely in the mood to read this one soon!
