Currently Obsessed With: The Looking Back At 2014 Resolutions Edition

I know I can’t be the only one who is completely horrible at following through on New Years Resolutions, and given it’s the end of the year, I thought I’d take a look back and see how many of them I followed through on (and how well I followed through). Yesterday’s Top Ten Tuesday post made me want to revisit the ones I made back in January, so I went back to the Top Ten Tuesday post I did earlier in the year for the 2014 resolutions I made.

  1. Re-read more.  I don’t keep track of what I re-read, but I know I did some.  Maybe I need to keep track of what I re-read and when I re-read it so I have a better idea of how much I’m re-reading and what I’m re-reading.  Still, I did it to some unknown degree, so that’s good.
  2. Read what I have.  I actually did pretty good with it.  I bought quite a few books and read those, of course, but I did make more of an effort to read what I have.
  3. Listen to more audio books.  I read less audio books than I did last year.  I have so many that I need to listen to.  I really need to listen to more books.
  4. Feel less self-conscious about book-related things.  I’m pretty I’m more self-conscious about some of my reading habits.
  5. Stay on top of behind-the-scenes book blogging stuff.  I succeeded in varying degrees.  It comes and goes, but I’m also okay with not putting pressure on myself to stay on top of things at all times.
  6. Write reviews as soon as possible after finishing the book.  I stuck to this for the most part, but it was pretty hard when I was going through that reading slump.
  7. Comment more on blogs.  I started off fairly well with this, but then…I just kind of stopped.
  8. Adding in more personal posts.  I have my monthly recap posts, and sometimes I do a movie review or some other bookish but not book review post.  I actually did pretty well with it.  Well, better than I expected.
  9. I totally suck at exercising.  I had periods where I kept up with it, but what I really need to do is keep track of it, because that’s when I actually seem to do better with it.
  10. Trying new things with crochet.  I started a blanket that I still need to finish, but at least I started a big project.  I’m really proud of the Princess Anna hat I made for Halloween, and I also made fingerless gloves which is also something I don’t normally make.  And I made a capelet!  I also learned how to do foundation single crochet and the ripple/chevron stitch, and I really want to learn how to do more things, and make different things, because there are so many awesome things to make.

Of course, I did better with some things than with others, but I did accomplish some of what I wanted to do this year. Hopefully, next year, I’ll have better luck.

Happy new year!

Gilmore Girls 3×19: Keg! Max!

Keg! Max! originally aired April 29, 2003.  This episode was written by Daniel Palladino and was directed by Chris Long.

Gilmore Girls Season 3 Graphic

This episode opens with Rory and Lorelei not knowing what to do on a Friday night now that they’re not going to Friday night dinner.  They’re having trouble remembering what they did on Friday nights, because they’ve gone to Richard and Emily’s for so long.

Lorelei gets a letter from Chilton, saying that Rory’s time there is coming to an end, and so is Lorelei’s.  Lorelei decides to help out the Booster Club one more time.  Jess agrees to go to the Stars Hollow High Prom with Rory, and Lane and her band are practicing for a gig at a party.  Lorelei has to keep laying people off at the inn, until it’s all repaired, and Lorelei offers to have Nicole stay in one of the few open rooms since he can’t meet them for breakfast over the weekend.

The booster club organized grad night on a yacht, and Lorelei was voted in as treasurer.  Max comes in as the faculty advisor for that meeting, and acts like everything is fine between him and Lorelei.  In a conversation with Sookie, Lorelei says that he treated her like the other parents, and even though she’s still seeing Alex, she’s not sure where Max stands, which seems to imply that she might want to get together with Max.

Jess tries to get prom tickets, but finds out he can’t, since he’s missed so much school he’s not able to graduate- meaning Jess will have to repeat his senior year.

At the party, we find out Young-Chu is still pretending to be Lane’s boyfriend, and that he’s at the party because he has nowhere else to go.  Dave wants to know when Lane is going to end things with Young-Chu, and isn’t happy that Young-Chu has feelings for Lane.  She’ll make prom happen for them somehow.  Jess wants to leave after the band plays a set, but Rory wants to stay, and ends up promising that they’ll go after the band is done playing for the night.

Jess and Rory run into Dean and Lindsay, and Lindsay recognizes him as the kid who used to go to their school.  Lane sees that Young-Chu is still at the party, and starts drinking some beer that someone’s cousin brought over.

Rory looks for Jess at the party, and finds him in one of the bedrooms upstairs.  They start making out, and Jess wants to go further but Rory doesn’t, and he ends up getting mad because he didn’t invite her up there.  Rory leaves the room upset and crying, not sure of what she did wrong, but Jess seems to realize that he did something wrong and goes after.  Rory goes by Dean, who notices that she’s upset, and Jess notices Dean asking Rory if she’s okay.  Dean and Jess (not surprisingly) end up getting into a fight.

Meanwhile, Lane calls her mom (drunk) and starts telling her mom that she likes Dave and wants to go to prom with him, amongst other things.  Dave overhears part of Lane’s call and hangs up the phone for her.

While the party is going on, Lorelei is at another Booster club meeting, where Max is not there as the faculty advisor.  She ends up finding him in his classroom, and he doesn’t want to see Lorelei again, because he can’t trust himself around her. And if he weren’t back at Chilton, he’d be seeing someone he met in California, so things are officially, officially over between them.

The episode ends with the cops showing up at the party, and Jess leaving.

What I Thought:

Honestly?  This is one of the episodes where I don’t understand why people love Jess and Rory together so much.  I know that Jess is a smart guy who’s into music and reading the way Rory is into music and reading, but Jess can be such an ass sometimes.

I know that we know he’s acting like a complete jerk because he can’t get prom tickets because he ditched so much school, and that Rory doesn’t know that Jess couldn’t get prom tickets, but still, I was really angry with Jess!  It’s totally not fair that he took it out on Rory.  At least he seemed to realize that he did something wrong…until he saw Dean trying to figure out what was going on with an upset Rory, and got into a fight with Dean about it.

I get why Rory wants to go to the Stars Hollow High prom, but it still seems a little weird to me.  Maybe because I was not the least bit interested in going to my own prom.

As for Lorelei and Max, it seemed like Lorelei was maybe interested in getting back together with Max. Maybe she wasn’t ready to get married before, but I honestly don’t get this story line at all, because her interest in him seems a little too random.  And I completely forgot about Alex- he was never mentioned after whatever episode he was last in, so it was quite the surprise that Lorelei was still kind of seeing him.  Maybe I assumed they broke up, because Lorelei doesn’t have the best of luck with guys.

Gilmore Girls 3×18: Happy Birthday, Baby

Happy Birthday, Baby originally aired April 22, 2003.  This episode was written by Amy Sherman-Palladino and was directed by Gail Mancuso.

Gilmore Girls Season 3 Graphic

This episode opens with Richard cooking Friday night dinner.  Rory and Lorelei tell Emily and Richard that Rory’s going to Yale, and Emily and Richard don’t react right away.  In fact, they act like everything is perfectly normal…until they are really happy, and go off to call their friends.

At the Inn, construction is underway, and has to be done in 10 days, when guests are scheduled to arrive.  Lorelei is having an emergency staff meeting with Sookie, Michel and Tobin, the night manager.  Lorelei is looking for ideas to keep the inn going, and Michel suggests a B & B.  Lorelei and Sookie shoot it down, but Tobin agrees with Michel and suddenly, Lorelei is willing to consider it.  Michel doesn’t want Tobin’s help, and Michel isn’t happy that Lorelei said she’d reconsider when Tobin agreed.  Tobin got Lorelei an early birthday present, and Michel and Tobin have this weird glaring/looking at each other weird moment.  Michel and Tobin try to one up each other throughout the episode with birthday gifts getting more awesome, and Tobin with a bunch of ideas on what to do with the inn that Michel doesn’t like.

Rory is busy planning Lorelei’s birthday party- from a cake at Westin’s, to the world’s largest pizza.  The pizza has some issues throughout the episode, and while Rory is getting soda, Jackson talks to Rory about how Sookie’s crying because Rory didn’t ask her to make the pizza, or ask him for vegetables for the pizza toppings.

While all of this is going on, Lorelei meets with Richard for lunch, where she gets a very large check.  Richard had made an investment in real estate when Lorelei was born, and got a letter saying that the complex was sold, so she is now getting the check.  She’s really excited, and we see her and Rory trying to decide what to do with the money.

Then, we have another Friday night dinner, where Lorelei pays back Richard and Emily for Rory’s tuition at Chilton.  She’s very thankful for what they’ve done, but Emily doesn’t take this well at all.  She thinks they don’t need her anymore, and that she doesn’t want the money.  Emily also thinks that Lorelei was unkind to use her birthday to tell them that Friday night dinners are over, and even though Lorelei never said it, Emily believes the check got the point across.  Richard never told Emily about the investment he made, and paying them back was one of the first things she thought of.  Richard told her that Emily wasn’t supposed to know, and Lorelei is confused, since he didn’t specifically tell her not to say anything.  However, meeting in secret was how Lorelei was supposed to know.  Emily tells her that they are released from their obligation of Friday night dinner.

In Stars Hollow, Rory wants to know why Lorelei did it the way she did it, and that Lorelei had to have known they wouldn’t want the money back and that Emily wouldn’t take it well.  According to Lorelei, Rory doesn’t know how hard it’s been for Lorelei to go to her parents for help with Rory’s tuition, because Lorelei decided that she didn’t want their help a long time ago. She did go to them for help because of Rory and doesn’t regret that.  Rory thinks she could have done it differently (but isn’t sure what that would be) and Lorelei talks about how her relationship with her parents is very different than the one that Rory has with them.  Lorelei isn’t going to let anyone make her feel guilty for paying back a loan that she always intended to pay back, and certainly doesn’t want Rory to judge her for doing so.  Rory apologizes but Lorelei says it’s fine.

The episode ends with Lorelei seeing the party Rory planned for her, and loves that Rory did that for her.

What I Thought:

The check that Lorelei gets…I have so many thoughts on this!  It’s one of those things where I get everyone’s side- well, mostly.  I get why Emily acted the way she did and I don’t blame her for not taking it well.  I do agree with Rory that Lorelei could have done it differently, and I get why Lorelei not only went to her parents for help but also why she wanted to pay them back.

I did find myself irritated with Richard for not explicitly saying “don’t tell Emily.”  It is very like Richard to have a meeting shrouded in secrecy where said secrecy implies that Lorelei not say anything.  But subtlety doesn’t seem to work well with Lorelei, and Richard really should have been more clear.

I also got annoyed with Lorelei when she and Rory were back in Stars Hollow after her birthday dinner with her parents. One thing I’ve thought since starting up with the re-watch ages ago is that we get a very one-sided picture of Lorelei’s relationship with her parents, and while I know the show mainly focuses on Lorelei and Rory, I really wish we saw more of what her parents side is.  I was definitely reminded of that towards the end of the episode.  I get she doesn’t have a good relationship with her parents, and I just really wish we got more of Emily and Richard’s side (instead of just what Emily says once in a blue moon).  And that Lorelei was more specific about why they were horrible parents.

I would like to randomly add that Rory didn’t have to go to a fancy, expensive private school that Lorelei really couldn’t afford.  I don’t know if Chilton offers scholarships, or if that would even be enough to cover tuition.  And I know it’s there so Rory can get to Harvard (at the time) and so that Emily and Richard are around, but still…it just seems weird to me.

I liked this episode, especially given there are no more Friday night dinners.  I didn’t completely love it, because I found Lorelei and Richard to be slightly irritating, but overall, I feel like we’ve hit the point where the story line that leads up to the season finale is set in motion in this episode.  Happy Birthday, Baby gets 3 mugs of coffee.

Gilmore Girls 3×17: A Tale Of Poes And Fire

A Tale Of Poes And Fire originally aired April 15, 2003.  This episode was written by Daniel Palladino and directed by Chris Long.

Gilmore Girls Season 3 Graphic

This episode starts off with Rory and Lorelei working on a pro-con list in Luke’s Diner- the pro-con list that will determine which college Rory should go to.  Luke is confused is to why they’re working on a pro-con list when everyone knows it’s going to be Harvard.  Kirk is also selling t-shirts that have a topical headline of stuff he’s seen around town.

The Poe Society is in town, and Jess gets Employee Of The Month At Wal-Mart.  Luke is confused about how Jess is working a 40 hour shift, and after talking with Lorelei, Luke isn’t sure if Jess is going to school- between the diner, Rory and school, how is he picking up so many extra hours?

The Poe Society is having an event at Miss Patty’s studio and there’s a weird vibe in the room.  Lindsay (Dean’s girlfriend) gives Rory weird looks, and Nicole (Luke’s girlfriend) gives Lorelei weird looks.  Lorelei tells Rory that Yale has a good drama department, so that’s a pro for Yale.  Lorelei needs a pen, and ends up borrowing one from Nicole.  Lorelei thinks Lindsay needs to mellow, and Rory points out that Nicole definitely has Lindsay’s attitude.  Miss Patty wants to know why they’re wasting their time on the pro-con lists when everyone knows it’s going to be Harvard. Lorelei says that if it’s Harvard, the lists will reflect that.

Then, Lorelei gets a call in the middle of the night that the Inn caught fire, and she and Rory rush over there.  No one was harmed, but Lorelei promises to make arrangements, and she, Sookie and Michel get things going.  Sookie is cooking for guests at Luke’s, and Michel set up emergency headquarters at Miss Patty’s. The nearby inns are all booked, so some of the townspeople offer up their houses for guests to stay at if they can’t get home.

At Chilton, Rory asks Madeleine and Louise if they’ve heard from Paris, since Paris has missed a few days of school after the meltdown speech.  They didn’t even know Paris was absent, so Rory goes to see Paris, to drop off her assignments.  Paris is in bed, watching soap operas, and knows Rory got into Harvard.  She hasn’t talked to her parents or to Jamie, and knows where she went wrong in her interview.  Being Paris, she recorded the interview, and even plays a clip for Rory.  Rory, by the way, hates that Paris is torturing herself, and starts telling Paris what to do.  Paris says there’s no alternative to Harvard.

Rory and Lorelei are getting Rory’s room for their house guests, and are talking about Rory’s big decision.  Lorelei believes the pro-con lists have changed, and that Yale is where Rory should go.  Rory isn’t done collecting data, and her wall very much says Harvard.  She also knows Lorelei was resistant to Yale, and doesn’t want Lorelei to hate the school she’s going to.  If it’s right for Rory, it’s right for Lorelei.

Some new guests show up at Lorelei’s, so she goes to stay at Luke’s.  We learn that Nicole is sensitive where Lorelei is concerned, because of Luke’s first date with her, where he kept talking about Lorelei.

The next day, Lorelei gets a call, saying that she can get into the inn.  She and Sookie meet Michel and the fire chief at the inn. They go inside to find the inn pretty destroyed.  While you see Michel, Lorelei and Sookie at the inn, Rory is in her room, looking at her Yale wall.

What I Thought:

We finally get Rory’s college decision!  This is easily the most interesting thing in the episode.  I know Harvard is something they’ve wanted a long time, and in particular, Lorelei really seemed to want it.  As a fan of the show, I knew Rory would go to Yale, but this time around, it seemed really obvious that once Yale came up, Rory would be going there.

I thought everyone’s reaction to the pro-con lists to be annoying.  Yes, Rory has talked about Harvard her whole life, but deciding which college to go to is a really big decision!  I actually thought the pro-con lists were an interesting way to think about the good and bad things about each school.  And honestly?  Just because Rory has talked about one school her whole life doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the right school for her.  People change, and things change, and sometimes, a school that Rory has talked about her whole life isn’t going to be the right school for her.

As for the inn, which is the other big thing going on…it hit me a lot more this time around.  Especially in contrast to Rory’s decision…and it really got me emotionally.  The scene at the very end, where you know Rory’s going to Yale, and where Lorelei is in the middle of the lobby…I have no idea how to explain how it made me feel.  I definitely felt like Rory’s story had a new beginning, while things at the Inn are up in the air.

I also wanted to touch on the Lindsay/Nicole stuff for a second.  I get why Nicole is sensitive where Lorelei is concerned, because it is a very Luke thing to talk about another woman (especially one who is not a relative) on a date with someone. And I did get this vibe that maybe Lindsay and Nicole (okay, definitely Nicole) feel threatened by Rory and Lorelei.  I know Rory’s moved on with Jess, but…she was with Dean for a long time, so maybe there’s something going on there that we don’t see.

Gilmore Girls 3×16: The Big One

The Big One originally aired February 25, 2003.  This episode was written by Amy Sherman-Palladino and was directed by Jamie Babbit.

Gilmore Girls Season 3 Graphic

This episode starts off with Rory and Lorelei waiting for Rory’s college acceptance letters.  Kirk is the new mail carrier, and is taking his time delivering the mail, sorting it as he goes along his route.

Luke has changed the menus at the diner.  They get completely redesigned, and he’s even added a few new dishes, as well as get rid of dishes that no one ordered.

Meanwhile, the Chilton bicentennial is coming up, and there is going to be a speech aired on C-SPAN.  Paris thinks that her winning the speech contest will be more satisfying if she beats Rory- which leads to Rory entering the contest.  At the inn, Lorelei and Sookie realize that people sending back Sookie’s food because it tastes awful means that Sookie’s pregnant. Sookie tells Jackson, but he crunches numbers, which leaves Sookie feeling like it didn’t go how she wanted it to go.

Lorelei stops to get some allergy medicine on her way to Friday night dinner and runs into Max, who asks about Rory.  He’s in town for the Chilton bicentennial events.  Lorelei arrives at the Gilmore house to find that Emily is visiting some of her DAR friends who are in the hospital, which means it’s going to be Richard, Rory and Lorelei for the evening.  Lorelei tells Rory that she ran into Max.  Rory didn’t know he was back in town, since he was on loan somewhere, but she does think Lorelei didn’t treat him well.

Lorelei goes to visit Sookie to see how things are going, and tells her about Max.  Sookie agrees with Rory in that he’s a good guy and Lorelei didn’t treat him well.  Rory and Paris had such great speeches that they are going to combine their speeches into one awesome one.  When working on the speech, Paris announces that she and Jamie had sex, and wants to have a healthy debate with Rory so she can figure out how she should be feeling about it.  Paris asks if Rory’s gone all the way with Jess and Dean, which gets Paris wondering why it’s right for her but not for Rory.  Rory tells her that it’s different because they’re different, as are Jamie and Jess, and that what’s right for Paris isn’t going to be right for Rory.  Lorelei comes in with pizza during this conversation, listening in, before making it obvious she’s there.

And when the C-SPAN-aired speech rolls around, Paris is nowhere to be found until minutes before the speech starts, looking disheveled.  We finally learn that Paris didn’t get into Harvard, and she thinks she deserved to get in because of how she’s worked, but is now being punished for having sex.

Also: before the speech starts, Lorelei sees Max and apologizes for not calling him.  She feels bad for not talking to him since the engagement was called off, and she really wanted to explain why she called it off.  He appreciates it, but it’s not necessary, since he’s moved on and has time to think while he was teaching a class at Stanford.

After Paris has her meltdown, she and Rory are talking.  Paris thinks they must really have not liked her if she didn’t get in, especially since generations of Gellar’s have gone to Harvard.  She also thinks Jamie won’t think she’s special because she didn’t get into Harvard.  Rory knows Paris will do great at whatever schools do accept her and that maybe it’ll be good for her to go to a different school.  Lorelei runs into Max again, and they kiss before he leaves.  Lorelei and Rory go home to find that Rory has several college acceptance letters.

What I Thought:

There is so much to talk about!  Rory getting accepted to everywhere isn’t surprising, but Paris not getting accepted to Harvard is.  I actually feel bad for Paris in this episode, mostly because of comparing herself to Rory and because of how Jamie won’t think she’s special.  And because not getting into Harvard is a punishment.  Although…if Jamie doesn’t think she’s special anymore, than he’s an idiot Paris doesn’t need.

And Paris comparing herself to Rory…I don’t know what to think about this.  I mean, it’s very Paris, since she and Rory are on the same level for many, many things, but Rory also makes a good point that they’re different.  There is a part of me that thinks maybe Paris isn’t ready to have sex if she needs data to back things up and if she needs to have a debate with Rory to figure out how she should feel.  At the same time, though, it’s very Paris to need data and to debate things, and as book-smart as she is, Paris is also kinda socially awkward, which makes it hard to sort out my own feelings about it.

Max and Lorelei is the last thing I wanted to talk about before wrapping things up.  I felt like it came out of nowhere, since we haven’t seen him in forever.  This around, I’m kind of confused as to why he’s suddenly popping up.  It’s nice he’s moved on, and didn’t need the closure, but I found that Lorelei apologizing for not talking to him after she broke off his engagement was odd and annoying.  Mostly because it is pretty typical of Lorelei to do what she did and then apologize later.  I guess his absence was explained by teaching at Stanford, but what high school English teacher goes from teaching high school English to a class at Stanford? Especially on “loan?”  Granted, I’m not in the education field, so my random thoughts about how weird Chilton and Stars Hollow High are could be wrong, but this is another instance where a high school teacher being loaned to a college cross-country seems really out-of-place.

Let’s Wrap It Up:

Overall, this episode is wavering between me thinking it’s okay and me liking it.  There are some really interesting conversations and things that happened, but the Max thing really seemed to come out of nowhere, and it seemed a little bit unnecessary.  The Big One gets 2.5 mugs of coffee.

Gilmore Girls 3×15: Face-Off

Face-Off originally aired February 18, 2003.  This episode was written by John Stephens and was directed by Kenny Ortega.

Gilmore Girls Season 3 Graphic

Face-Off opens with Taylor going over the details of his upcoming family reunion with Lorelei, who needs Rory to pretend to be sick so Lorelei doesn’t have to talk to Taylor anymore.  He also gives them buttons that show support for the Stars Hollow High hockey team making it to the championship or finals or whatever.

Richard’s mom Trix is going to be staying with Emily and Richard while her floors are getting re-done, which isn’t going over well with Emily.  Lorelei has a date with Alex after Friday night dinner, while Rory is waiting for Jess to call.  When she tells Lorelei about her night the next day, we learn that it never occurred to Rory to call Jess.  Rory wants to know why Lorelei asks her if she’s going to tell Jess before starting to compare Jess and Dean.  Lorelei says it’s not fair to compare them because Dean and Jess are different, and that Rory got lucky with Dean as a first boyfriend.

Mrs. Kim set Lane up with someone, and it makes Dave jealous.  Dave even runs to the hockey game to check on Lane and Yung Chu, and finds out Yung Chu has a girlfriend.

Rory ends up going to the hockey game since Jess still hasn’t called to make plans.  Lane is wondering if everything is okay, since Rory is there without Jess.  Rory and Lane run into a girl named Lindsay, who acts a little weird around Rory.  Lane tells Rory that some people at Stars Hollow High think that Rory thinks she better then them because Rory is going to Chilton, but it turns out that the weirdness is because Lindsay and Dean are dating.  Lane keeps asking Rory if she’s okay, and Rory says she’s find because it had to happen sometime.  Lane feels bad for not knowing, but Rory says it’s not a big deal.

Meanwhile, Jess shows up at Rory’s to find she’s not there, and is really surprised that she’s not home.  Lorelei pretty much tells him to get it together before going to Emily’s to drop off some things for something Trix is planning.  When Emily gets back to her house, she finds Trix kissing a man in a jogging suit before leaving the house.  Emily is in an especially good mood because she has something on Trix, and accidentally spills the beans when Trix pushes Emily a little too far.  Emily apologizes to Trix later than evening.

After the hockey game is over (and Stars Hollow High loses the game), Dean and Rory talk.  He wasn’t sure how to tell Rory about him and Lindsay.  Rory leaves a message for Jess, ranting about how she’s not going to going to wait around for Jess to call her, because she wants specific plans, not a vague we’ll hang out later. She also mentions that she’s spoiled and likes being spoiled, and Jess is just going to have to deal with it, otherwise he’ll have to find someone else.  She leaves the rink to find Jess waiting for her with tickets to the Distillers concert.

What I Thought:

I don’t really have thoughts on the Emily and Trix stuff, so I’m just going to talk about Rory and Jess, who both really annoyed me in this episode.

I’m surprised it took so long for Rory to compare Jess and Dean…at least, a comparison that we see on screen.  Jess doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who calls someone to make plans, and at this point, you’d think Rory would actually know this.

And her whole I’m spoiled and I like being that way, and Jess is just going to have to deal with it?  Good heavens, I wanted to smack Rory for that.  It is one of the things I dislike about Rory, because she seems pretty used to getting what she wants and she does seem to have this big sense of entitlement.

Also: Dean moving on.  I’m not surprised that she thought Dean would still be pining after her.  Rory says it’s fine that he moved on, because it had to happen eventually, but I wonder if it’s really okay with her.  I could be reading too much into it, but given what we’ve seen of her up to this point (and Rory in seasons to come) it does seem like Rory to be taken off-guard and hoping he’s still pining after her.

Gilmore Girls 3×14: Swan Song

Swan Song originally aired February 11, 2003.  This episode was written by Daniel Palladino and was directed by Chris Long.

Gilmore Girls Season 3 Graphic

We open this episode with a Friday night dinner, where Emily has spent quite a bit of time complaining about Trix, her mother-in-law. Emily manages to direct the conversation to Rory’s break-up with Dean and her new relationship with Jess.

Emily wants to meet Jess, so Rory says she’ll ask him.  Rory does get Jess to agree, but Jess (being Jess) is resistant to the idea. Lorelei ends up going to New York to see a musical with Alex, Sookie and Jackson, which means it’ll be just Rory and Jess for the next Friday night dinner.  Miss Patty happens to need Rory to see her rehearse her one woman show, so Rory finds herself sitting next to Dean for the duration of Miss Patty’s show.

This doesn’t go over well with Jess, who found out on a flier in town, and wishes Rory had told him.  Lorelei isn’t happy with Rory’s plan of studying at school before going to Emily’s and then getting a ride home with Jess.  The dinner doesn’t go well, and it all starts with Jess showing up late with a black eye.  Rory is concerned and wants to know what happened but Jess doesn’t want to talk about it. He’s definitely not in a good mood, because he had to sit in traffic to go to a dinner with Emily (that he didn’t want to go to, of course) and he’s thirsty and wants to eat.

Emily’s making small talk, and Rory keeps pressing the issue of the black eye.  She thinks it’s because he got into a fight with Dean, and Jess makes it clear he doesn’t want to talk about it, because he’s trying to make a good impression on Emily for Rory’s sake. And according to Jess, Rory is making that difficult because she keeps bringing up his black eye.  She and Jess eventually talk in Richard’s study. Rory is still convinced that Jess and Dean got into a fight, and tries to convince Jess that nothing happened with Dean when they were watching Miss Patty’s show.  Jess is trying, but ends up leaving, so Rory has to explain to Emily that he left. Emily is pretty awesome about it…until Lorelei calls Rory to check in, and then goes on a rant about how irresponsible Jess is for thinking cell phones are beneath him.

Rory goes to ask Dean about Jess, where she realizes he didn’t get into a fight with Dean.  She keeps trying to call him, but Jess is ignoring her calls.  It turns out a swan at the lake attacked him, but Luke doesn’t believe him.  They go to the lake, and Jess is glad the dinner is behind him.  Until Luke tells him that this probably isn’t going to be the last thing that Jess will have to do.  Because by dating a girl like Rory, the whole family is involved, and so are her friends.  Luke thinks Jess is jealous of Dean, but Jess thinks Dean is a wuss.  Still, it comes up that Rory and Dean were together for a couple years, and Jess can’t just avoid Rory because of a fight a couple months into their relationship.

Because I’m not sure where to fit this in, part of why Lorelei is freaked out about the dinner and Jess driving Rory home is because she’s concerned about Rory having sex.  Rory tells Lorelei that she’s too busy to think about it, but later on tells her that she isn’t too busy to think about it.  She does promise to talk to Lorelei about it before it happens.

Jess and Rory make up, and Rory apologizes for not trusting Jess.  Jess tells her that he got hit in the face when he was playing football with a friend.

There’s also some band stuff!  The band needs to add a love song to their set, and Lorelei almost spills the beans about Lane and Dave to the band.  Mrs. Kim see Dave with the band in town, and warns him about Lane’s crush on him, and to be careful around her.  The band also finds out that Dave has played at the Kim’s church.

My Thoughts:

So…I have no idea where to start!  Let’s see…oh, I know where I’ll start: the Friday night dinner that Jess goes to.  I know that Jess doesn’t want to particularly go to a Friday night dinner to meet Emily, but at the same time, you’d think he’d want to get it over with.  And I actually respect that Jess does seem to be making an effort even though he didn’t want to be there.  Although…it is very Rory to keep bringing up his black eye even though Jess has made it perfectly clear he doesn’t want to talk about it. And given that she thinks Jess is embarrassing her, I’m surprised she didn’t drop it.

Still, Emily seemed to be great about it.  At least, she was good about it in front of Rory, and it’s not until she goes on a rant when she’s talking to Lorelei that we know her true feelings.

One thing I thought was interesting was how Emily thought it was refreshing that Jess didn’t have a cell phone, but later tells Lorelei that how irresponsible it is that he doesn’t have one.  I know this episode took place over ten years ago, and that cell phones were a thing, but I don’t remember them being as prevalent as they are today.

I’m also not surprised by Jess avoiding Rory after the dinner.  And I thought Luke brought up an interesting point in the possibility of Jess being jealous of Dean.  I never paid attention to that line before, but it is a possibility.  And it really strikes me as how different Dean and Jess are.  Because Jess has a lot in common with Rory, but he’s also not the loyal, nice guy to bring home to the family kind of guy that Dean is.  As for the assumption that Dean and Jess got into a fight: it seems like Jess seemed slightly surprised by that, but I don’t blame everyone for jumping to that conclusion, given their history. Oh, and why would Jess not tell Rory a swan attacked him?  Is it because it’s pretty lame, and he doesn’t think she’d believe it?  Because Jess tossing around a football is a bit hard to believe.

As for Rory having/not having time to think about sex…I thought Lorelei’s reaction was really interesting.  Lorelei’s a pretty cool mom, and is pretty open about things, and yet Rory thinking about having sex seemed to be a little weird for Lorelei.  I’m not sure if it’s because it could be with Jess, or if it just generally freaks her out, or if it’s because Lorelei had Rory so young or what, but Lorelei’s reaction is definitely interesting.

I liked this episode, and it’s a bit more light-hearted than the last episode.  It’s kind of hard to live up to the last episode, but it was still fun to watch.  This episode gets 3.5 mugs of coffee.

Gilmore Girls 3×13: Dear Emily And Richard

Dear Emily And Richard originally aired February 4, 2003.  This episode was written by Amy Sherman-Palladino and was directed by Gail Mancuso.

Gilmore Girls Season 3 Graphic

This episode starts off another Friday night dinner, where Richard and Emily are horrified that Rory and Lorelei plan on backpacking through Europe and staying in hostels, instead of staying in hotels for their trip to Europe.

From there, we see a bit of the construction on the soda shop, and we learn that Dean is helping Taylor out.  There is also going to be a retirement party at the inn, which has an ever-changing theme.

We go to a flashback, where Lorelei and Chris are at Emily’s and Chris is talking about how he wants to take a year off and travel around Europe for a year instead of going to college.

Rory is at Chilton, working on the paper, when she gets a call from Sherry’s friend Maureen.  Sherry, of course, has screwed up by going into labor early, instead of sticking to the c-section that she had scheduled for the following week.  Maureen wants to know if Rory can reschedule school and go to Boston, since Sherry screwed up, but Rory says she’ll be there.

We have another flashback, where Lorelei can’t fit into her dress for the portrait she’s having done for her coming out.

Back in present time, Lorelei meets Nicole at Luke’s because she needs some coffee before heading over to Emily’s.

Rory arrives at the hospital to see that only Maureen is there, because everyone had planned on next week’s c-section, because yet again, Sherry has screwed up.  Maureen goes back to work, while Rory goes to see Sherry, who is feeling abandoned.  Sherry is not happy about having GiGi at the moment, because she wrote it down for next week, and that it’s not supposed to be happening.

Lorelei goes to see Emily on…a Sunday.  Richard is out of town again, and Lorelei is curious about what Emily does all day while Richard is gone.  Emily spends her time on functions and fundraising events and the DAR and managing the household.  Emily doesn’t watch a lot of tv, but does like musicals.

We have another flashback, where Richard and Emily and Chris’ parents are talking about what to do about Lorelei being pregnant. Francie wants to send Lorelei away, because there are places for girls like her.  Strobe suggests abortion, and Richard suggests that Chris and Lorelei get married, live with Richard and Emily, and Chris will go to school and get a job at Richard’s firm.  It also comes up that Chris shouldn’t sacrifice everything because Lorelei got pregnant.  Richard goes to his study, and we see that Lorelei and Chris are listening on the stairs.  Lorelei thinks they should decide for themselves what to do, but Richard’s plan sounds fine to Chris.

Back in the present, Rory is helping Sherry with work stuff, and we learn that Chris is out-of-town but is also on his way.  A nurse wants to know who’s going in with Sherry, and it’s going to be Chris.  The nurse wants to know who will go in with her if he’s not there, but Sherry wants to wait until he’s there. The nurse isn’t accepting this, and it’s decided Rory will be with Sherry in the delivery room.  Rory decides that she needs a coffee break, and goes out of the room to call Lorelei, because Rory really needs Lorelei there.  Of course, Lorelei goes, which doesn’t go over well with Emily, who still thinks that Sherry destroyed any chance of Chris and Lorelei being together.  And Emily also doesn’t understand why Rory is there or why Lorelei is going.

Lorelei arrives at the hospital, where she manages to get Sherry to stop working.  Chris also arrives just as Sherry is going into the delivery room, much to the relief of Lorelei, who does not have to be with Sherry in the delivery room.

We also have a few more flashbacks.  One where Lorelei arrives at the hospital, one where Richard and Emily arrive at the hospital after getting Lorelei’s note, and one where Chris and Lorelei are watching Rory in the nursery.

Chris comes out of the delivery room, and Lorelei goes to see GiGi, since Rory is sleping.  He eventually goes to get Rory, and we next find Lorelei at Emily’s to set up a DVD player, so that Emily can watch musicals.

We have one last flashback where Emily and Richard are going to a function, and discover that Lorelei has left because of a note she left for them.

The episode ends with the viewer looking at a portrait of Richard, Emily and Lorelei.

My Thoughts:

Let’s start with Emily’s reaction to Sherry’s pregnancy.  She’s still clearly not happy about it, and it is important to point out that Lorelei went to Boston because Rory called her.  And of course Rory is going to be there, because GiGi is her half-sister.

Maureen going on and on about how Sherry screwed up by going into labor early…I was really annoyed with that!  I honestly don’t know why she keeps focusing on that.  Because when it happens, it happens, and there’s no stopping it.  And Sherry not wanting to do it because she wrote it down for next week…I’m sure scheduling a c-section is a thing that actually happens with a certain segment of the population, but the way Sherry and her friends are acting…it just seems like they’re a bit out of touch with how being pregnant goes for most women.

Also, what day is this happening?  Because it’s said that it’s a Sunday, which means the Chilton newspaper staff is at school on a Sunday.  Since it’s been a while: what kind of school is Chilton that it lets its students be there on a Sunday to work on the paper? It being on a Sunday doesn’t match up with Rory rescheduling school.  Again, Maureen seems to be slightly out of touch with the fact that school is mandatory and can’t be rescheduled.  Although…it can’t be regular school hours, since Rory just leaves, unless it’s something that happens off-screen.

I really want to focus on the flashbacks, which were totally amazing.  They worked with this episode really well, and they were so seamless!  I feel like this is the most neutral version of Lorelei’s pregnancy that we get in the entire series.  I don’t think I picked up on this before, but Lorelei and Rory’s trip to Europe when Rory graduates…I wonder if it’s inspired by the trip that Chris and Lorelei never took?  It is like Lorelei to not tell Richard and Emily she’s in labor, and I actually don’t blame Emily for being upset that Lorelei just left a note.  As for the conversation all of the parents have, I’m not surprised that Francie suggests Lorelei be sent away, that Strobe suggests abortion, and that Richard suggests marriage.  I am curious as to why adoption doesn’t come up, but then again, adoption rarely seems to come up in these situations.

Them living with Richard and Emily make the most sense, given how Francie and Strobe react.  I know homes for pregnant teens was a thing at one point, but was it still a thing in the 80’s?  Because I wasn’t alive for half the 80’s, and I was too little to remember the other half, so I have no clue.

And the flashback where Emily discovers that Lorelei has left home?  I kind of get some of the tension between Emily and Lorelei, and if Lorelei just left with a note…I feel like I have a better understanding of where Emily is coming from.

Pop Culture:

I know they’re there, I just didn’t keep track of any of them.

Favorite Funny Moment:

Episode Rating:

This is the only episode where we have flashbacks, and if there is any episode that warrants them, it would be this episode.  This is one of the best episodes of the series, and some of the tension between Richard and Emily and Lorelei make more sense.  Dear Emily and Richard gets 5 mugs of coffee.

Gilmore Girls 3×12: Lorelei Out Of Water

Lorelei Out Of Water originally aired January 28, 2003.  This episode was written by Janet Leahy and was directed by Jamie Babbit.

We start this episode with Lorelei and Rory looking at the garage, which needs to be cleaned if Lane’s band is going to be practicing there.

From there, Luke is annoyed by all of the noise the construction going on next door is making, and Luke just needs Taylor to bring by the lease agreement.  However, Taylor’s lawyer stops by with the paperwork and just needs to witness Luke’s signature.  He tells her she doesn’t need to pay, but later worries that she’ll get into trouble for having Taylor pay for it.  He asks her out on a date, and she agrees.

Lane’s band is ready to practice in the garage, and Lorelei has some basic rules for them to follow.  Later on, Lane is excited that she might go to prom, and she and Rory pick up some make-up for a wedding.  Lane’s cousin is getting married, and there have been 46 weddings at the Kim’s house, and it’s going to be the last one for a while.  Lane has a plan in place so Dave can take her to prom, but Mrs. Kim has a different guy in mind for Lane.  Dave is out of the question, since he isn’t Korean.

Rory and Paris still aren’t getting along- Paris tried to impeach Rory from student council, and when the advisor says it’s not possible, she wants something in place to make it possible.  Things are so tense that they get called to the Headmaster’s office, where they have yet another fight.  Rory says she’ll quit, because she never wanted it in the first place.  She only did it because Paris wasn’t going to win without Rory.  Headmaster Charleston goes through a list of possible reasons why they’re fighting, but he finally tells Rory that she is not going to resign because she needs to honor her commitment, and Paris that she’s worked too hard to get where she is to throw it away because of a vendetta.  If they can’t resolve their conflict in a sheltered (possibly pampered) environment, then they may not survive college.  And he will send a letter correcting his previous letters of recommendations if he has to.

Lorelei agrees to go fishing with Alex, because she wasn’t sure what to say when he said he liked fishing and camping.  Rory checks out some books from the library, but Luke offers to teach her the basics when he learns that Lorelei is learning how to fish from a book.

Lorelei does go fishing, and when Lorelei goes outside, Alex asks Rory if Lorelei’s been fishing, and if she’d like lunch at a lodge close to the place where they’re going fishing.

Rory come home to Lorelei watching a fish swim in the bathtub.

Thoughts:

So…Lorelei fishing.  At first, I was wondering why they didn’t google it, but then I realized that this episode took place long before you would Google it.  And they know Luke likes to go fishing, so why wouldn’t they ask him?  I get why Lorelei doesn’t want to ask- she admits to feeling stupid about pretending to like something because of a guy, and while I know researching is Rory’s thing, you’d think that would occur to Rory.  It also seemed like Alex knew Lorelei didn’t fish, but maybe I’m reading too much into it.  I don’t know how/why I know this, but it just seemed like he knew.

As for Paris and Rory…Charleston does have a point about how they need to resolve this conflict.  I’m glad he told Rory she wasn’t going to quit student council, because she really needs to stick with it.  And to think about why she’s doing something, and do it because she truly wants to and not because Paris wants her to.  Sadly, I’m not surprised that Rory wants to quit, and not just because I’ve seen this episode before.  And Paris having a vendetta is also not a surprise.

I am surprised that Charleston says that some would say that Chilton is a pampered environment.  However, I do agree with his assessment, because some of the things that Chilton allows…it is a pretty privileged school, what with letting students reserve classrooms on a Saturday so that students can work on a group assignment, and classes like obscure Russian poetry, or whatever was offered as a summer school class back in season one…or was it season two?  Anyway, there is the sense that a little of the students are very privileged, and for some reason, it just is surprising that Charleston would actually say that.

I have no thoughts for Lane’s prom…yet.  But that comes up later, so I may have thoughts then.  And Rory and Lorelei’s garage is one scary place.  Like, it’s Hoarder’s scary.  Seriously.

This is another episode that is kind of forgettable.  We see some of the Rory/Paris tension, and while I know that gets resolved at some point, I can’t remember when that is.  And a few things in this episode are set-up for future episodes, but…I kind of forgot about a lot of the goings on in this episode.  So, this episode gets 2.5 mugs of coffee.

Gilmore Girls 3×11: I Solemnly Swear…

I Solemnly Swear…originally aired January 21, 2003.  This episode was written by John Stephens and was directed by Carla McCloskey.

Gilmore Girls Season 3 Graphic

This episode opens with a Friday night dinner, where we learn that Emily is being sued by a former maid for wrongful termination. Lorelei isn’t surprised until she learns that it’s the first time that Emily is being sued by a former maid, which leads to Lorelei finally being surprised.  Lorelei is trying to figure out if the maid was a good maid, other than being someone who clomps around the house, but Emily is very focused on the clomping.

From there…all sorts of things happen!

Sookie and Lorelei attend a course at the Learning Center about how to open an inn, and not surprisingly, the course has no new information for them.  However, Sookie runs into a guy she used to work with one summer, and they catch up while Lorelei talks to his business partner.  Sookie and Joe make plans to go to a restaraunt owned by someone they also used to work with.  It turns out that Joe was always into Sookie, and this was his second chance.  However, Sookie isn’t sure what to tell him at first, because she didn’t realize it was a date at first.  And can’t believe she accidentally flirted with someone.  Jackson doesn’t take it well when Sookie makes all of his favorite things.  Lorelei also gets asked out on a date, and she is going coffee-tasting with Alex.  Which is right up her alley, as she loves coffee.

At Chilton, Francie pretends that she wants to be friends with Rory, only to tell Paris that she has a lot of respect for her, and that Rory thinks Paris is too wrapped up in her boyfriend and is totally acting like the supplemental student council meeting was Rory’s idea.  Which Paris doesn’t take very well, since she’s feeling pretty betrayed by Rory.  To the point that she can’t believe she considered Rory her best friend.  Rory tries explaining, but Paris doesn’t believe her.

And Emily being sued by a former maid comes up later in the episode, when Lorelei has to go to a deposition…and also doesn’t want to lie for Emily, who wants Lorelei to tell the lawyers that she treats her maids well.

The episode ends with Lorelei talking on the phone to Alex.

Thoughts:

I’m not surprised that Emily is being sued by a former maid, considering her high standards.  It is a running joke that she can’t keep a maid for long, and it’s always amusing when it comes up.  It is very much like Emily to fire someone for making noise when they walk, but I have to say that I am surprised that this is the first time wrongful termination has come up. Then again, the show isn’t about Emily.  Still, I think Emily does have a point when she says she pays her staff to do things a certain way.  I mean, with Emily, it can go a little too far, but at the same time, she is paying them…

Still, Emily reading pieces of the deposition at a Friday night dinner…Lorelei’s responses were her, but I think she could have taken it a little more seriously.  Because I can see Lorelei not taking it seriously. Then again, maybe that was something that wasn’t shown on-screen.

And I’m not surprised that Sookie and Lorelei didn’t find the course helpful.  They do have a pretty good handle on things at the Inn. As for Sookie and her old friend, I didn’t get the vibe that it was a date, but it’s still very Sookie to not know what to do.  And to make things up to Jackson, who reacted like I would expect him to.  And it’s nice to see Lorelei agree to go on a date with someone!

As for the Chilton drama, Francie is one evil girl.  Rory did accidentally mention that Paris had a boyfriend to Francie in the last episode, which turned out to be a dumb move, because Francie totally saw a chance to use that piece of information.  It’s not surprising she’d lie about Rory’s motives to Paris, and that Paris would believe it.  Still, I’m surprised that Paris considered Rory her best friend, because while they are friend-ish, they don’t seem like they’re best friends.  At least, not on Rory’s end.
