Top Ten Books To Read For Valentine’s Day

I can’t believe it’s almost Valentine’s Day!  I don’t have any big plans (like, no plans whatsoever) but maybe I should read one of the books on my list!

  1. Anna And The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins is the first book I thought of!  Seriously, it’s perfect for Valentine’s Day!
  2. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.  I don’t know why I thought of this one, but I did.  Maybe it’s because Lena and Ethan go through so much to be together.
  3. Ink And Bone by Rachel Caine.  This one is a great book for book lovers, and while it’s not a…more traditional choice, I still think it’s a good Valentine’s day read.
  4. Ash by Malinda Lo.  I just love this Cinderella re-telling.  It’s completely amazing!
  5. Isla And The Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins.  I couldn’t decided between this one and Anna, so I decided to go with both.  Also, it’s just perfect for Valentine’s Day!
  6. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han.  It’s a cute read, and there’s something romantic about writing love letters to boys you’ve had huge crushes on.
  7. Anew by Chelsea Fine.  There is a very old, long-running romance in this paranormal series, and somehow, it fits perfectly for a Valentine’s Day read.
  8. The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han.  There is such a cute romance in the book, and there were times when I couldn’t make up my mind about who I wanted Belly to end up with.
  9. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green.  If you want your heart ripped to shreds this Valentine’s Day, this is probably the book for you.
  10. Harry Potter.  No reason, other than I feel like it.  Harry Potter is perfect for any occasion.

Ten Books That Have Been On My TBR List For Too Long

This week is a freebie, which means we get to pick whatever topic we want!  I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I got to thinking about the books that I’ve recently added to my TBR (because of the list from last week), and then I started thinking about the books that have been on my TBR for a really long time, and I decided that I need to do a list of ten books that have been on my TBR for way too long.  It’s very much slanted towards Tudor history, but these books are ones I should try to read (and soon, I hope, but I doubt that will actually happen).

  1. Elizabeth’s Women: Friends, Rivals, And Foes Who Shaped The Virgin Queen by Tracy Borman.  I love Tudor history, and have wanted to read it for a long time, but I haven’t had a chance to read it yet.
  2. Mary Tudor: Princess, Bastard, Queen by Anna Whitelock.  I don’t know a lot about her, and I want to know more.  She comes up a lot in Tudor history, and yet, I don’t actually take the time to read anything specifically about her.
  3. Anne Boleyn: Henry VIII’s Obsession by Anne Norton.  It would be interesting to get a different perspective on her, and she’s just an interesting person in general.
  4. Catherine De Medici: Renaissance Queen Of Medici by Leonie Frieda.  I didn’t realize she was a queen of France and the mother-in-law of Mary, Queen Of Scots until I started watching Reign, which lead to googling her, and then the History Chicks did an episode about Mary, Queen Of Scots, and for some reason, that makes me want to know more about her.
  5. The Life And Death Of Anne Boleyn by Eric Ives.  I tend to stick with Alison Weir (who I love) for anything Tudor-related, but at the same time, I really like the time period, and it’s always good to see what other people have written about the time period.
  6. Catherine Of Aragon: The Spanish Queen Of Henry VIII by Giles Tremlett.  She’s the wife we probably know the most about, and yet, I haven’t read anything that tells just her story.  This one looks really good.
  7. Lady Jane Grey: A Tudor Mystery by Eric Ives.  Her story is interesting, especially in relation to Elizabeth I’s story.
  8. Stonewall by Martin Duberman.  I’ve heard of the Stonewall Riots, but I don’t know anything about them, and this book seems like a good place to start.
  9. The Perils Of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long.  I’ve heard a lot of really good things about this series, and I’ve wanted to read it for years, and yet I never seem to actually read it.
  10. It’s Kind Of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini.  This book is another one I’ve wanted to read for a few years, and even though I have a copy, I still haven’t read it.

Top Ten Books I’ve Recently Added To My TBR

It feels like I’m always finding new books to add to a really long TBR pile, and these 10 are most recent books I’ve added to the list things I hope to read someday.  All links go to goodreads!

Top Ten Tuesday 10 Recent TBR Books

  1. Walk On Earth A Stranger by Rae Carson.  I’ve heard a lot about this book- some good, some bad- but I still want to read it because I’m really curious.
  2. Princess Academy by Shannon Hale.  I was in the mood for some audio books, and thought this one looked cute and different, so I checked it out of the library, and I’ll start listening to it once I’m done with the one I’m currently listening to.
  3. The Witches: Salem, 1692 by Stacy Schiff.  I was at Barnes And Noble recently, and was in the mood for something that was non-fiction and history.  I picked this one up since I don’t know a lot about the Salem Witch Trials.
  4. Six-Gun Snow White by Catherynne Valente.  This seems like a different take on Snow White- it’s a Western, and you don’t really see that in YA. Well, I haven’t, but it’s enough to get my attention.
  5. In Real Life by Jessica Love.  Going on a road trip to meet someone you’ve only talked to online, only to discover they have some secrets…I don’t know why, but it seems like a book I’d like.
  6. The Steep And Thorny Way by Cat Winters.  I’m not a big fan of Shakespeare, but I love re-tellings, and this Hamlet re-telling set in 1920’s Oregon sounds really good!
  7. Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova.  A powerful witch trying to get rid of her magic, but instead making her family vanish sounds really different but also interesting.
  8. Outrun The Moon by Stacey Lee.  Under The Painted Sky was in the running for my top ten favorite books from 2015, and I’ve been looking forward to reading her next book.  I can’t wait until it comes out!
  9. The Shadow Hour by Melissa Grey.  I can’t wait to read this one.  I liked The Girl At Midnight, and I’m curious to see where things go.
  10. A Criminal Magic by Lee Kelly.  This one has comparisons to The Night Circus, which I loved, so I’m really interested to see how/why A Criminal Magic got that comparison.  Any book where there’s an amendment making magic illegal has my attention!

Top Ten 2015 Releases I Didn’t Get A Chance To Read

It seems like every year, there are book I want to read, and never get to, so I’m hoping this year, I’ll get to read the following books!

  1. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.  A society divided by the color of your blood sounds super-interesting.  I wanted to get to it, but I just never got the chance to read it.
  2. The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows.  I loved her Incarnate trilogy, and was really excited about The Orphan Queen.  I definitely want to get to it this year!
  3. Black Dove, White Raven by Elizabeth Wein.  I liked Code Name Verity, and loved Rose Under Fire, and so I knew I had to read Black Dove, White Raven!
  4. All The Rage by Courtney Summers.  I bought this recently, so hopefully, I’ll read it soon.
  5. Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge.  I am very interested in Crimson Bound after reading Cruel Beauty last year.  I’ve had a copy from the library for weeks, and yet, I still haven’t picked it up.  I’ll try to read it before I have to return it, but if I don’t, I’ll just have to get it later.
  6. The Heart Of Betrayal by Mary Pearson.  I need to read it!  The Kiss Of Deception was awesome, and I don’t know why I haven’t read it, because I was so excited about it!
  7. The Boy Most Likely To by Huntley Fitzpatrick.  I forgot it came out last year, but after loving The Boy Next Door, I was so excited when I saw there was going to be another book set in the same world!
  8. George by Alex Gino.  I’ve heard so much about George, and it seems like an awesome book.
  9. Six Of Crows by Leah Bardugo.  I started this one, but wasn’t in the mood for it, so I set it aside.  I need to pick it back up because I loved her Grisha trilogy, and any book set in that world is worth reading!
  10. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.  I LOVED Fangirl so much, and there was a lot of fangirling when I found out that Rowell was writing Carry On. This was another book I started, and set aside.  It’s Carry On, and I wanted to read it at the right time.  I’m pretty sure I’ll read it this year!

Top Ten Resolutions For 2016

This is the first time I’ve really thought about resolutions and goals for this year, and some are things I’ve wanted to do in previous years, while others are new goals!

The Bookish:

  1. Keep reading diversely.  This year, I’m aiming for 3-5 books a month- on average, I read just under 6 books a month last year, so I know I can do it!
  2. Actually, I just want to get back into reading.  I’ve had a weird reading slump, and yesterday was the first day I picked up a book in over a month.  It’s good to be reading, but for now, I’ll probably ease my way into it.
  3. Read the e-books I have.  I feel like I say this every year and never do, but this year, I really want to!
  4. I’ve decided to not set a goal for total number of books read this year.  I’ve done the Goodreads challenge for the last few years, but this year, I’ve decided to not do it.  I’m just not feeling a number, and I sort of want to focus on reading different things, because sometimes I feel like I’m too focused on how many books I’m reading and not enough on reading cool, interesting books.

The Non-Bookish:

  1. Save more money!  I’m saving, but not as much as I could be, so that will definitely be more of a focus this year.
  2. The traditional exercise more.  I sit way too much, and even if I only do 10 minutes a day, it’s better than nothing.  Eventually, it’ll get easier!
  3. Actually keep my room organized.  I mentioned this the other day, and I’d really like to stay organized so I don’t find myself randomly organizing my room every few years.
  4. Have an awesome year.  This is my year, I can feel it.

Crochet:

  1. Make decent progress on a ripple blanket I’ve been working on for several years.  I work on it for a while, and then I either get distracted by some other project, or I want to work on it, but it’s, like, 90 degrees out so I don’t work on it.
  2. Do 52 granny squares!  That’s going to be my project for the year, one granny square a week.

Top Ten Books I’ve Read This Year

I’ve read some great books this year!  Granted, it’s sort of been an off-year for me reading-wise, particularly since mid-August, but I have read some amazing books this year.

Best Book 2015 Year-End Collage

  1. Winter by Marissa Meyer.  I read it last month (and have sadly procrastinated with writing a review), but it was awesome, and I loved it and it was such a fantastic end to a really awesome series.
  2. Ash by Malinda Lo.  It’s my favorite one of hers that I’ve read!  If you love fairy tale re-tellings, I think you’ll love this book!
  3. Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Adichie.  I am so impressed with her ability to tell a story, and I can’t wait to read more of her!
  4. Breaker by Emma Raveling.  It’s such a great end to the series, and I am so sad that this one is over.
  5. None Of The Above by I.W. Gregorio.
  6. Joyride by Anna Banks.  I felt so much for Carly, and how hard she and her brother worked to bring her parents over to the U.S.
  7. Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor.  I love the magic in this book, and differently awesome the magic and mythology is.  Also, Sunny is such a great character.
  8. Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon.  I felt for Maddy, and everything that happened and all of the secrets she learned, but it is a great book, and still one of my favorites, even if I have mixed feelings about the ending.
  9. How To Say Goodbye In Robot by Natalie Standiford.  This book was everything I wanted from Eleanor & Park, and I just loved Jonah and Bea and the radio show they call into every night.
  10. The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.  I am astounded that the family of someone whose cells contributed so much to science can’t get decent medical insurance.  Really, this book has astounded me in so many ways.

The Books That Were Awesome, But Didn’t Quite Make The List: Under The Painted Sky by Stacey Lee, The Iron Warrior by Julie Kagawa, Prudence by Gail Carriger, Ink And Bone by Rachel Caine, Does My Head Look Big In This? by Randa Abel-Fattah, Throne Of Glass by Sarah J Maas and The Truth About Air & Water by Katherine Owen

Top Ten Favorite New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2015

I can’t believe it’s December already!  It’s definitely that time of year for looking back at 2015, and this list (all about my new favorite authors) is a good way to kick-off all of the end-of-year stuff I want to talk to about!

  1. Nnedi Okorafor.  I’ve read a couple of her books (Akata Witch and Who Fears Death), and I can’t wait to read more books by her!
  2. Chimamanda Adichie.  I read Purple Hibiscus, which I loved, and I got a couple of her other books from Audible to listen to (soon, I hope, because Purple Hibiscus was awesome).
  3. Andy Weir.  The Martian was a lot of fun to listen to, and I hope anything else Weir writes will be just as fun!
  4. Atia Habawi.  I loved The Secret Sky, and I’m looking forward to see what else she writes!
  5. Anna Banks.  Joyride was another book I loved, and I know she has some other books out that I want to check out.
  6. Nicola Yoon.  I have super-mixed feelings about the end of Everything, Everything, but overall I felt for Maddy and her mom, and I liked it enough that I would read whatever Yoon writes next.
  7. I.W. Gregorio.  None Of The Above is one of my favorite books I’ve read this year (most of the authors on today’s list have written some of my favorite books I’ve read this year), and I want another book from Gregorio.
  8. Malinda Lo.  I’ve read several of her books, but I think Ash is my favorite of the 3 I’ve read.  It’s such a great take on Cinderella.
  9. Stacey Lee.  Under The Painted Sky was great (I really recommend it, especially if you like historical fiction), and I think she’s one of my new favorite authors.
  10. Sarah J. Maas.  I really need to finish her Throne Of Glass series.  And I need to read A Court Of Thorns And Roses.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten 2016 Debuts I’m Looking Forward To

Top Ten 2016 Debuts I’m Looking Forward To Reading

I’m the first to admit that I’m not someone who pays a lot of attention to release dates or if a book is a debut or not. But these sort of lists are always fun for me because it means I actually through through whatever lists are on goodreads and find some new books that look really interesting and cool.  Here are ten debuts that I want to read next year!

  1. This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp.  Is it just me or does it seem like there’s been quite a few YA books that focus on school shootings over the last few years?  I’m intrigued by this one because it takes place in 54 minutes and is told by 4 different people.  I hope it lives up to the heart-breakingly awesome Hate List.
  2. The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig.  It’s time travel!  Across centuries and places (both real and imagined) and it sounds like it’s going to be completely awesome!
  3. The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye.  Ancient duels leading to the winner becoming the Imperial Enchanter, and the loser being sentenced to death…this isn’t a duel I’d want to lose.
  4. This Raging Light by Estelle Laure.  I’ve seen two different release dates for it (a few days before Christmas for 3 of the 4 editions on goodreads, and the other being in January).  I could have sworn it was a January book, but I’m still putting it on the list because I have the feeling that Lucille (who is a teen who is taking care of her family and paying the bills, and falls in love at an unexpected time) is a character I will love and want to be friends with.
  5. The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi.  Horoscopes and locked doors and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit…and a book that is inspired by Indian mythology caught my attention.
  6. Beyond The Red by Ava Jae.  Crimson deserts, rebel soldiers and secrets that could result in death sound right up my alley.
  7. The Reader by Traci Chee.  A girl growing up in an illiterate society who turns to a book to save her aunt…this appeals to my love of books and reading.
  8. These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker and Kelly Zekas.  This book had me at Jane Austen meets X-Men.  That is all.
  9. Enter Title Here by Rahul Kanakia.  Something about this book reminds me of Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld. Maybe it’s because this book is about a girl writing a book about a teenage girl and realizes she needs to have the “typical” high school experience so that people will want to read her book.
  10. The Way I Used To Be by Amber Smith.  It’s compared to the incredibly amazing Speak, and while that’s an amazing book to live up to, if it’s even slightly good, I’ll be happy.

Top Ten Book Quotes I’ve Loved From The Last Year

Anytime I do one of these posts about book quotes, I always have such a hard time because I don’t keep track of quotes in any way.  A few I’ve read in the last couple of months, but others were not so recent (but all were books I’ve read this year).  These are some favorites!

“She cried for the girl who never belonged.  A girl who tried so hard, harder than anyone else, and still never had anything to show for it.”

-Fairest: Levana’s Story  by Marissa Meyer

“I read what I like.”

-Throne Of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

“Everything is relative.  If you want to understand a problem you look at its cause.  You don’t look at its manifestation.”

-Does My Head Look Big In This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah

“You have ink in your blood, boy, and no help for it.  Books will never be just a business to you.”

-Ink And Bone by Rachel Caine

“Everything’s a risk.  Not doing anything is a risk.  It’s up to you.”

-Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

“LOG ENTRY: SOL 381 I’ve been thinking about laws on Mars.

Yeah, I know, it’s a stupid thing to think about, but I have a lot of free time.

There’s an international treaty saying no country can lay claim to anything that’s not on Earth. And by another treaty, if you’re not in any country’s territory, maritime law applies.

So Mars is “international waters.”

NASA is an American nonmilitary organization, and it owns the Hab. So while I’m in the Hab, American law applies. As soon as I step outside, I’m in international waters. Then when I get in the rover, I’m back to American law.

Here’s the cool part: I will eventually go to Schiaparelli and commandeer the Ares 4 lander. Nobody explicitly gave me permission to do this, and they can’t until I’m aboard Ares 4 and operating the comm system. After I board Ares 4, before talking to NASA, I will take control of a craft in international waters without permission.

That makes me a pirate!

A space pirate!”

-The Martian by Andy Weir

“She’s the most important person in the world and her family living in poverty. If our mother is so important to science, why can’t we get health insurance?”

-The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

“One should never save cake for later when it can be eaten now.”

-Winter by Marissa Meyer

“I’ve read many more books than you. It doesn’t matter how many you’ve read. I’ve read more. Believe me.”

-Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

“If anyone dies today it will be because they finally have something to believe in. Don’t you even think about taking that away from them now.”

-Winter by Marissa Meyer

Top Ten Book To Movie Adaptations I Need To Watch

I feel like I’m somewhat okay with seeing movie adaptations.  At least, I am with YA adaptations, but other ones? Not so much.  It took some to looking at the books I’ve read over the last few years, but I did come up with 10!

  1. The Martian.  I really need to watch it, because it would make such a great movie.  And Matt Damon is such an awesome choice for Mark Whatney.
  2. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.  I am so excited there’s going to be another movie set in the HP universe, and I can’t wait to see it!
  3. The Maze Runner.  I haven’t read the books or seen the movie, but one of these days…I will!
  4. Paper Towns.  I did try to read Paper Towns, but I couldn’t get into it.  I definitely want to see it.  I know there’s a movie, but I’ve heard absolutely nothing about when it’s coming out.  Maybe I should find out.
  5. Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.  I listened to the book ages ago, and I’m sort of curious to see how it works as a movie.
  6. Allegiant.  I’m not too bothered by changes made for movies, but if a certain character lives, I’m actually going to be annoyed, because it will completely change such a tragic ending.
  7. Mockingjay, Part Two.  I can’t wait to see how it all ends.
  8. The numerous adaptations of Jane Austen’s books.  I know I’ve seen the Keira Knightley adaptation of Pride And Prejudice, but that’s about it.  That will be a fun weekend, though.
  9. First Position.  I read Michaela DePrince’s memoir this year, and it made me really want to watch First Position, a dance documentary she appears in, so much.
  10. Warm Bodies.  Actually, I’ve seen the movie, but I need to listen to the book.
