Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Characters I’d Like To Check In With

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely folks over at The Broke And The Bookish.  Every week, bloggers from all over share their own top ten list based on the topic of the week.  You can find all Top Ten Tuesdays here.

Top Ten Characters I’d Like To Check In With

Sometimes when I finish a book, I wonder how the characters are doing, and this list is all about that!  Some characters stay with you long after closing the book, and some I really need to know are doing okay.

  1. Tally and Lincoln from The Truth In Lies series by Katherine Owen.  It seems like there’s a good possibility of another book about these two, but that’s not stopping me from wanting to know how things are working out for them after how the second book ended.
  2. Kendra from the Ondine series by Emma Raveling.  I want to know how the elemental community is doing after the war with the Shadow is over.
  3. Anna and St. Clair.  I need to know all about their wedding, and I need to know that they had their happily ever after, even though I know they’ve had it.
  4. The entire gang from K.A. Tucker’s Ten Ten Breaths series.  I need to know how they’re all doing, especially Kacey and Livie.
  5. Cath from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.  I really want to know what life is like for Cath now that Simon Snow is over.
  6. Emma from the Breathing Series by Rebecca Donovan.  I just need to know she’s okay and happy and at peace with everything that happened to her.
  7. Rowan from Me Since You by Laura Weiss.  She’s another character that I need to know is doing okay.
  8. Lennie from The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson.  I pretty much want to know what’s up with Lennie.
  9. Valerie from Hate List by Jennifer Brown.  I want to see how she’s doing, because I’ve wondered how she’d be doing after graduating from high school and everything that happened.
  10. The characters from The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.  I really want to know how the Circus is going.  I really do.
  11. And of course, I need to know how everyone from the Harry Potter series is doing.  I know JKR has revealed bits and pieces about what happened to the characters after the series has ended, but that’s not going to stop me from wanting to know how they’re doing!

Book Review Round-Up #3

Book Review Round-Up is a new feature where I talk about several of the books I’ve been reading lately.

Book #1: Waistcoats & Weaponry by Gail Carriger

Waistcoats & Weaponry CoverSource/Format: borrowed the e-book from the library

What It’s About: Class is back in session…

Sophronia continues her second year at finishing school in style–with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown, of course. Such a fashionable choice of weapon comes in handy when Sophronia, her best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and the charming Lord Felix Mersey stowaway on a train to return their classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspected what–or who–they would find aboard that suspiciously empty train. Sophronia uncovers a plot that threatens to throw all of London into chaos and she must decide where her loyalties lie, once and for all.

Gather your poison, steel tipped quill, and the rest of your school supplies and join Mademoiselle Geraldine’s proper young killing machines in the third rousing installment in the New York Times bestselling Finishing School Series by steampunk author, Gail Carriger.

What I Thought: This was such a fun book to read!  I mean, her books are always fun to read, so this isn’t unusual or anything.  I love seeing what Sophronia is up to, and I was quite surprised by how the book ended! I really didn’t see that coming!  And I also want to see how that plays out in the next book!  But I also want to see how things go with Sidheag and some of the events that happen in this one that we see much more of in the Parasol Protectorate series.  It really makes me want to go back and listen to that series to refresh my memory! Anyway, I’m curious to see if Sophronia will end up with someone (and who it would be), and I really am looking forward to reading the rest of the series to see how things turn out.  Especially with everything that keeps happening!

Rating: 4 stars.  I really liked it but didn’t love it.  While it’s a fun book that makes you wonder where things are headed, it also didn’t have the appeal that the other books did.

Book #2: Breaker by Emma Raveling

Breaker CoverSource/Format: own the e-book!

What It’s About: War. Prophecy. Freedom.

She fought for herself.

She fought for friendship and love.

Now, Kendra Irisavie fights for the survival of her world.

War rages on, leaving no one untouched. Destruction rips through elemental communities and terror flourishes in its wake. Suspicion soars, order fractures, and loyalties crumble despite Kendra’s desperate attempts to protect everyone she holds dear.

When an organized Aquidae army launches a series of merciless assaults, Kendra and her friends set out to end the bloodshed once and for all. With the fate of elementals hanging in balance, the Shadow and sondaleur hunt each other down in a brutal match of cunning and will.

Kendra has trained for this her entire life. But in a ravaged world where trust is scarce and no life is sacred, she soon realizes her battle may be against an invincible enemy and that her darkest days lie ahead.

Twists and turns shape her harrowing odyssey, leading to a stunning climax that challenges everything she believes in.

Torn between destiny and autonomy, Kendra must finally decide whether the cost of freedom is too high.

Heartbreaking decisions, turbulent alliances, and shattering revelations collide in Breaker, the explosive conclusion to the Ondine Quartet.

What I Thought: I just loved Breaker!  You really couldn’t ask for a better ending to a great series!  There was part of me that didn’t want to finish reading because  didn’t want it to be over and yet I needed to know how it all ended.  We do find out who the Shadow is, and I was surprised and yet not surprised by who it was.  I mean, it really was perfect, but there was a small part of me that thought it would be someone closer to everything.  I’m glad it wasn’t, because that would have been horrible, and yet that’s totally what I was expecting.  There were a couple of character deaths that had me completely shocked, and one, I had to go back and re-read a few chapters because I couldn’t believe I missed it…only to not see even the slightest of hints. Maybe I need to re-read it again to see if I can find it…

Anyway, it really was a heart-breaking but hopeful end to the series, and I really want things to work out for Kendra, with being called to the ocean and then coming back with no memories…I hope they come back! Because I really want her to remember things.

Rating: 5 stars for being an awesome book that really tied everything together.

Book #3: Perfect Escape by Jennifer Brown

Perfect Escape CoverSource/Format: own the e-book!

What It’s About: Kendra has always felt overshadowed by her older brother, Grayson, whose OCD forces him to live a life of carefully coordinated routines. The only way Kendra can stand out next to Grayson is to be perfect, and she has perfection down to an art — until a cheating scandal threatens her flawless reputation.

Behind the wheel of her car, with Grayson asleep beside her, Kendra decides to drive away from it all — with enough distance, maybe she’ll be able to figure everything out. But eventually, Kendra must stop running and come to terms with herself, her brother, and her past.

With undeniable grace and humor, acclaimed author Jennifer Brown explores OCD, the pressure for perfection, and the emotional highs and lows of a complex sibling relationship.

What I Thought: I liked Perfect Escape!  Not as much as I loved Hate List (because, really, I love that book so much, and it’s really hard to not compare every other Jennifer Brown book to that one, which is sort of unfair), but I still really related to both Kendra and Grayson.  I could definitely relate to Kendra, and how she felt like she needed to be the perfect child, especially with everything going on with Grayson.  You did get how people treated her because of it, and that was completely horrible of them.  Seriously, it made me so angry.  Anyway, it was really easy to understand why Kendra acted the way she did, and I think it’s something we can all relate to in some way.  Still, I didn’t completely love Kendra, and felt like she didn’t really get what Grayson was going through, and saw him more as a problem than an actual person going through something.  And I felt like she really didn’t seem to learn from her mistakes.

I also really understood Grayson, and how he felt.  I’ve struggled with depression for a long time, and I can totally relate to wanting to be normal, even though there really isn’t a normal.  I also really felt for him, because it definitely seemed like his parents weren’t quite sure what to do and that they seemed to walk around on eggshells because of the fact that he has OCD.

And the ending!  It just sort of…ended.  I really wanted more resolution with what happened when they got back home.

Rating: 3 stars.  I liked, and I could relate to both Grayson and Kendra, but I also found myself annoyed with both Kendra and how the book ended.

Book Review Round-Up #2

Book review round-up is a new feature, where I talk about a few of the books I’ve been reading.  It was inspired by a weird blogging/reading funk I’ve been in, and this is the 2nd one!

Book #1: Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas

Mine Till Midnight CoverSource/Format: borrowed the e-book from the library

What It’s About: When an unexpected inheritance elevates her family to the ranks of the aristocracy, Amelia Hathaway discovers that tending to her younger sisters and wayward brother was easy compared to navigating the intricacies of the ton. Even more challenging: the attraction she feels for the tall, dark, and dangerously handsome Cam Rohan.

Wealthy beyond most men’s dreams, Cam has tired of society’s petty restrictions and longs to return to his “uncivilized” Gypsy roots. When the delectable Amelia appeals to him for help, he intends to offer only friendship—but intentions are no match for the desire that blindsides them both. But can a man who spurns tradition be tempted into that most time-honored arrangement: marriage? Life in London society is about to get a whole lot hotter…

What I Thought: I thought Mine Till Midnight was okay.  I really felt like there wasn’t any chemistry between Amelia and Cam, and it was hard to root for them and care about their happily ever after.  I so did not feel it between them. That’s pretty much it, because I really can’t recall anything else.

Rating: 2 stars.  Pretty much because I didn’t feel it between Amelia and Cam.

Book #2: Doll Bones by Holly Black

Doll Bones CoverSource/Format: borrowed from the library

What It’s About: Zach, Alice, and Poppy, friends from a Pennsylvania middle school who have long enjoyed acting out imaginary adventures with dolls and action figures, embark on a real-life quest to Ohio to bury a doll made from the ashes of a dead girl.

What I Thought: I thought Doll Bones was okay.  If I were in elementary school or middle school, I’d probably love the adventure but it didn’t quite work for me.  I think because one of them was way more into imaginary adventures than the other two, and it seemed weird that no one would notice a few kids wandering around by themselves for a while. I know they need to in order to fulfill their quest, but something about it made it hard to get into.  It is clear that there’s a very established story in the world they created, and that is a story I’d love to read…it seems much more interesting than the three kids growing out of their imaginary adventures.  But I do think some people will like it, even if it wasn’t for me.

Rating: 2 stars, for reasons I mentioned above.

Book #3: The Truth About Air And Water by Katherine Owen

The Truth About Air And Water CoverSource/Format: I own the e-book!

What It’s About: They share an epic love but one moment changes everything. A life together that seemed certain is shattered. One learns you never love the same way twice; the other learns what it means to come home. You only think you know how this love story goes, but do you really know how an epic love can end?

What I Thought: I am so glad that there’s a sequel to This Much Is True!  I really liked seeing what was going on with Tally and Elvis, and even though things were rough for them, like really rough, they did get through it.  And I really hope that there’s another book, because I feel like their story is far from over.  It definitely stands on its own, and even though you don’t need to read the first book in order to know what’s going on in this book, I think it’s a really good idea to read the first one in order to fully get how much these two have been through.  It has more of an impact when you understand everything that’s happened.  And I just loved it, and it was heart-breaking but not heart-breaking and angsty the way This Much Is True was.  I don’t know if it’s because of the weird reading funk I’ve been going through, but it didn’t hit me emotionally the way I thought it was.

Rating: 5 stars for being such a great story, and for keeping their story…very true to them, and who they are as a couple and as people.

Book Review Round-Up #1

I haven’t been blogging a lot lately, and have pretty much been sticking to Top Ten Tuesday posts and a movie review (for Insurgent), but I have been reading…and since I want to talk about what I’ve been reading, I thought I’d do a few posts where I talk a little about the books I’ve been reading.  This is the first of several review round-ups I’m working on, so enjoy!

Book #1: Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Since You've Been Gone CoverFormat/Source: borrowed the e-book from the library

What It’s About: Emily is about to take some risks and have the most unexpected summer ever in this new novel from the bestselling author of Second Chance Summer and Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour.

Before Sloane, Emily didn’t go to parties, she barely talked to guys, and she didn’t do anything crazy. Enter Sloane, social tornado and the best kind of best friend—someone who yanks you out of your shell.

But right before what should have been an epic summer, Sloane just…disappears. No note. No calls. No texts. No Sloane. There’s just a random to-do list with thirteen bizarre tasks that Emily would never try. But what if they can lead her to Sloane

Apple picking at night? Okay, easy enough.

Dance until dawn? Sure. Why not?

Kiss a stranger? Wait…what?

Getting through Sloane’s list will mean a lot of firsts, and with a whole summer ahead of her—and with the unexpected help of the handsome Frank Porter—who knows what she’ll find.

Go Skinny Dipping? Um…

What I Thought: Since You’ve Been Gone is an okay book.  It’s definitely a cute book, and I liked seeing Emily get out of her comfort zone.  I wasn’t completely into the book, mostly because who Emily was seemed to be really dependent on Sloane being around, and if Sloane wasn’t around, Emily wasn’t much of anyone.  It really did feel like her entire life and personality and identity revolved around Sloane.  While I can relate to your identity revolving around someone or something, it really felt irritating in this book, especially since she seemed to have latched onto a few different people, only for the something really similar to happen again.  I felt like Sloane was also a really shitty friend, especially with how she just left Emily with no explanation, and just a list of things to do.  Even though her explanation at the end of the book made sense, it was really hard to care, no matter how hard I tried.  The characters weren’t memorable, and I felt like her friendship with Sloane was built up to be bigger and more important than I felt it was.  I think teenage me would have liked it, but for adult me, it was too boring and felt pretty tame.  I did like the random playlists throughout the book, and I wish I had thought to check out some of the songs before I had to return it to the library.  I don’t know that I’d buy it, because it would be silly buying it just for the playlists, but I’d definitely check it out from the library again just for that.

Rating: 2 stars.  It’s cute but Sloane just seemed like an (understandably) not so great person, while Emily seemed really dependent on others for her identity.

Book #2: Huntress by Malinda Lo

Huntress CoverFormat/Source: borrowed the paperback from a friend

What It’s About: Nature is out of balance in the human world. The sun hasn’t shone in years, and crops are failing. Worse yet, strange and hostile creatures have begun to appear. The people’s survival hangs in the balance.

To solve the crisis, the oracle stones are cast, and Kaede and Taisin, two seventeen-year-old girls, are picked to go on a dangerous and unheard-of journey to Tanlili, the city of the Fairy Queen. Taisin is a sage, thrumming with magic, and Kaede is of the earth, without a speck of the otherworldly. And yet the two girls’ destinies are drawn together during the mission. As members of their party succumb to unearthly attacks and fairy tricks, the two come to rely on each other and even begin to fall in love. But the Kingdom needs only one huntress to save it, and what it takes could tear Kaede and Taisin apart forever.

The exciting adventure prequel to Malinda Lo’s highly acclaimed novel Ash is overflowing with lush Chinese influences and details inspired by the I Ching, and is filled with action and romance.

What I Thought: I liked Huntress!  I think I would have liked it more if I hadn’t read it at a time when focusing on anything except staring blankly into space.  Timing really is important when it comes to reading, because I felt like nature hanging in the balance really didn’t come through.  I think a few other things didn’t make a lot of sense when I was reading it, but I honestly can’t remember what they are now!  She did create a really interesting world, from what I can remember and after reading Adaptation recently (and really liking that world), I do want to go back and re-read it, since I really do think I read it at the wrong time, and my thoughts on the book suffered because of it.  Anyway, I liked that Kaede and Taisin live in a world where same-sex marriage is rare but also…not a big deal at all, especially when it comes to arranged marriages and marrying for alliances.

Rating: 3 stars.  I liked it and I really wish I had read it at a time when I had more energy to focus on it, because I think I would have like it a lot more.  I’m definitely going to have to re-read it.

Book #3: Waterfall by Lauren Kate

Waterfall CoverSource/Format: e-book from the library

What It’s About: Eureka’s tears have flooded the earth, and now Atlantis is rising, bringing with it its evil king, Atlas. Eureka is the only one who can stop him, but first she must learn how to fight. She travels across the ocean with Cat, her family, and Ander, the gorgeous and mysterious Seedbearer who promises to help her find Solon, an enigmatic lost Seedbearer who knows how to defeat Atlas.

Once on land, Eureka is taunted by gossipwitches, a group of displaced Atlantean sorceresses, and ambushed by locals struggling to survive amid the destruction her tears have wrought. And she feels no closer to facing Atlas or saving the world when Solon lets slip that love is Ander’s weakness, and that any affection he feels toward her makes him age faster.

Trying to make sense of the dark world her sorrow has created, Eureka receives startling insight from an enchanted pond. Her bewildering reflection reveals a soul-crushing secret: if she’s strong enough, Eureka can draw on this knowledge to defeat Atlas—unless her broken heart is just what he needs to fuel his rising kingdom…

In Waterfall, Eureka has the chance to save the world. But she’ll have to give up everything—even love.

What I Thought: To be honest, I remember nothing about Waterfall.  Seriously.  I have it rated 4 stars, and I could not even begin to tell you why.  I really couldn’t.  Obviously, I didn’t love it or anything, and I’m pretty sure that I didn’t like it the way I liked the first book.  Actually…I did like the place where Solon lives- it felt like a really pretty place.  I just wish I had more thoughts!

Rating: 4 stars.  I wish I could remember why.  Maybe I’ll do an updated review on this one if I find myself re-reading it.

Currently Obsessed With: March Was Mostly Boring

Currently Obsessed With is a once-a-month (but sometimes more) feature where I talk about my favorite things I’m obsessing over.

Currently Obsessed With

March was a weird month, and I talked about how I still felt pretty low energy with reading and blogging. Hopefully April will be better!

Nails/Beauty:

I don’t have much to say, since I’ve already talked up my month in nails, but I did want to talk about that super-sticky base coat I got (since I forgot to mention it).  I did notice that my nail polish started to chip within a day, which is weird because I didn’t do anything different.  But other than a few small chips (and one sort of big one), it’s been okay.

Crochet:

I haven’t really been working on anything- I just haven’t been in the mood or have the energy to crochet anything, except whatever it is I’ve been doing during yarn group.

Books:

I went to a book signing, for Prudence by Gail Carriger, and it was super-fun.  I don’t think I laughed during a book signing so much before, it was absolutely hysterical.  I also got City Of A Thousand Dolls by Miriam Forster as my audible pick, and I’m excited because I’ve wanted to read it for ages.

T.V./Movies:

I’ve been trying to catch up on a few things, like Revenge and Blacklist!  I also loved the season finale for Hart Of Dixie, and I’m hoping it doesn’t get canceled, but something about the episode made me feel like it might be, because it felt more like a final send-off.

I saw Insurgent, which I already talked about, and I also went to Cinderella, which I loved.  The costumes and sets were beautiful, and I had Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo stuck in my head for a week.  I do wish the one song that Cinderella and her mom sing were on the soundtrack, but maybe there’s another version I can hunt down.

Around The Internet:

I’ve found a few awesome things I really want to share!

Like this post about Harry Potter Spin-Offs and this hilarious post of Harry Potter Parodies.  I think Sorted This Way is my favorite one of the bunch, but they’re all really cool!

This is a really interesting post about re-reading, and this is an interesting one about pelvic pain and YA.

Smart Bitches, Trashy Books has a hilarious post about clippy bookmarks and romance novel covers.

I really like this post about the history of Harlequin.  It’s totally worth checking out, even if you’re not a romance fan.

This blog post about a culture of reading/a culture of buying made me think a lot!  As did this one about e-book pricing…and I think I will never understand e-book pricing.

This blog post about reading diversely reminds me that I really want to do my own post about it (even though the thought terrifies me for some reason).  It also makes me glad I’m such a YA fan, because it seems like there’s a lot of resources for YA fans, but that could just be that it’s on my radar a lot more than adult books.

Music:

I haven’t listened to a lot of music, but I do have a few new albums I haven’t had a chance to listen to. Hopefully, I’ll have more to share next month!

That’s actually it for March!  I really hope April is much more exciting and eventful for me.  Happy Thursday!

Nail Polish Talk: So Many Thoughts About March 2015 Nail Polish!

I thought I’d do another nail polish specific post, because I have so much to talk about!

I wore Julep’s Something Blue, Leah, Payton (with an Essie Lux Effects top coat) and OPI’s No Room For The Blues.

Nail Polish Project- March 2015 Collage

I don’t know how I feel about Something Blue.  It’s a pretty shade of blue, and it would look great as a back-drop for nail art.  I think I like it better as an accent nail if I do it on its own, maybe my entire hand if there’s something glittery on top.  I will say that there were weird patches where it didn’t cover my entire nail, and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t how I put it on, because it’s the same way I always put on nail polish, and there’s never been weird strips in the middle of my nail with no polish on it.  It’s not streaky, so maybe it’s the brush or something?

I really like Leah and Payton, which are really good colors for St. Patrick’s Day (and also the reason why I wore them).  I really liked Leah, and it’s also a really pretty green for spring and summer.  I also really like Payton, which I wore with Essie’s luxeffects in Summit Of Style.  Payton is streaky and needs a couple of coats to not only even itself out but for you to really see the pretty Kelly green that it is.  Since I wore Payton the week of St. Patrick’s day, I knew something gold was in order, and I ended up wearing the Essie top coat over it.  I really hate the brush, and I felt like I had to apply the gold glitter in strips.  But I really liked how it didn’t feel glittery, even though it was, and it would be really good at Christmas/New Years.  Like most glitter nail polish, it’s a pain to remove, but I always seem to forget that when I’m wearing it!

OPI’s No Room For The Blues seemed like a good Spring/Easter blue, and it sort of reminds me of Something Blue.  I also wanted to do a little something to jazz it up, so I added some stripes.  The ones on my right hand ended up a little weird, partly because I don’t usually do stripes or dots or anything so I’m not that good at it, and partly because I’m left-handed.  The ones I did with my right hand aren’t that much better, but they are a little bit better.  I do feel the same way about No Room For The Blues that I do about Something Blue.

Maven- March 2015

I got the Julep mystery box, and while I wasn’t sure about getting it, I was actually really happy with it overall!  I ended up getting a couple of duplicates- Dawn, which I wore a few weeks ago, and Candace, which I forgot I had until I did an inventory of my nail polish.  We’ll get to that later.

I also got Beth, Sharna and Ilga, and Ilga is the only one in the box I wouldn’t ordinarily go for it.  It’s a really good Halloween red, so I’m pretty wear it sometime in October.  And Beth and Sharna are up my alley, even though Sharna was in a Maven box that I skipped a few months ago.

I ended up doing an inventory of the nail polish I have.  I have a lot (especially of Julep) and figured it might be nice to have an inventory of what I have.  I’m glad I did, because that’s how I figured out I had Candace already.  And it’s much easier searching a spreadsheet than it would be to look at every single bottle in my nail polish caddy.  Seriously.  The only thing will be making sure I keep it updated, but I don’t think it’ll be that much of an issue since I tend to stick with Julep these days.

I did end up skipping March’s box, mostly because I really needed a break from getting nail polish.

Nail Polish- March 2015

And I have a few other nail polishes to talk about!  I got Brigitte in the Maven secret store, plus a couple of base coats, another OPI nail polish, and the Essie top coat.

I’m on a base coat kick, and I’m trying to find a few different ones I like.  My nails do need a little bit of strengthener sometimes, so I usually use one of those, but I was intrigued by the idea of a super-sticky base coat, so we’ll see how well that works out.  And I haven’t worn Brigitte, but I definitely wanted a white-white nail polish.  And the new OPI one looked interesting.  I also have my eye on a couple of the Morgan Taylor Cinderella collection polishes so I’m hoping that I have a chance to get them before they go!  I know I said a couple of paragraphs ago that I needed a nail polish break.  But Julep will always be there, while these Morgan Taylor ones will probably be a limited edition sort of thing.

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Books I Recently Added To My To-Read List

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely folks over at The Broke And The Bookish.  Every week, bloggers from all over share their own top ten list based on the topic of the week.  You can find all Top Ten Tuesdays here.

Ten Books I Recently Added To My To-Read List

So, this one was super easy, especially with goodreads!  I really love adding new books to my TBR, so it’s fun to actually share some of them!  I literally went with the 10 most recent books I added. For the most part, it definitely reflects me wanting to read more diversely, and I didn’t realize how many books I added because of it until I started working on this list.

  1. Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison.  I was inspired by last weeks to list re-read it, and added it to my TBR to remind myself to re-read it.
  2. the Soulfinder’s series by Maria Snyder.  I thought about doing each one as its own, but decided against it!  I’m super-excited that she has a new series set in Ixia/Citia.
  3. Hotel On The Corner Of Bitter And Sweet by Jamie Ford.  I’m really intrigued by this book!  It’s about this hotel that has the belongings of people who were sent to Japanese internment camps during World War 2, and it’s been boarded up for decades before opening again.
  4. Out Of Nowhere by Maria Padian.  I added this book about a town in Maine that has a lot of Somali refugees and how this one guy is changed by 9/11 and getting to know his classmates.
  5. A Time Of Miracles by Anne-Laure Bondoux, translated by Y Maudet.  I stumbled across this one while searching for some books that were more diverse, and really liked the premise of this one.  It’s all about the collapse of the Soviet Union, and how this girl is fleeing Georgia, and ends up all over Europe.
  6. Alive In The Killing Fields by Nawuth Keat and Martha Kendall.  I’m looking forward to reading this memoir about a man who lived in Cambodia during the reign of Pol Pot.
  7. Life, After by Sarah Darer Littman.  This book about a family moving from Argentina to the U.S. sounds like a book that I’d really like.
  8. Tell Us We’re Home by Marina Budhos.  3 girls, living a small town, where things get really touchy after one of their moms is accused of theft, sounds right up my alley.
  9. Blue Gold by Elizabeth Stewart.  I’m really interested in this one!  It’s about 3 girls, on three different continents, who are all affected by an increased need for blue gold.
  10. The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier.  It’s a ghost story!  And a mysterious, ancient curse!  What’s not to like?

Book Talk: I Hate This Low-Energy Reading Funk Thing

Book Talk is a sporadic feature where I talk about bookish but non-book review things.

Book Talk

Today is about…this weird reading funk that’s been going on for almost a couple of months now.  It started out innocently enough, with me not having the mental energy to read or focus on much of anything except coming home from work tired enough to go to bed at 5:30…but also just able to do not much of anything except sit on the couch and watch t.v.  February was a bit crazy for me, and because I was so low-energy and unable to focus on things like reading and crochet, I wasn’t doing much of either.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it a reading slump, and I really did want to read, I just didn’t have the ability to focus on it very much. It has been a lot easier to deal with than the reading slump I had a few months ago- mostly because of having been through it, and knowing I’d come out of it eventually but it still sucked because the desire was there, even if the ability wasn’t.

So I started reading fewer books and at a slower pace, since that was really all I could manage.

But even though I’m not coming home from work exhausted, I’m finding that things are still pretty wonky.

Like, I’m back to reading now, and I have these random periods where I’ll go through most of a book in one sitting before finishing the last chapter or two a few days later.  Or I’ll start a book, only to find that I can’t focus on it, so I’ll put it on hold until I can focus on it.  There are also all of the times I tell myself I’m going to start reading a book, but then I never do, and so I put it on hold.  It is a lot better now, but I still find myself having some trouble focusing on some books.

I’ve also found that it’s seeped its way into blogging.  I don’t have energy for writing blog posts.  It’s why my posts have been Top Ten Tuesday posts lately, plus the odd movie review or monthly recap posts.  Even writing those posts have been really challenging- even on the weekend, when I have more energy.

I still want to review all of the books I’ve been reading (a few of which are from last month), so in the meantime, I’m planning on a few posts where I’ll talk a little bit about each book I read, instead of a full-on review.  I think I’ll be doing that for a while, because while I’m able to focus a little more than I was able to, I’m still not able to focus on it as much as I want to/used to.

I was able to sit down and write a couple of review round-up posts, and it was good to get back into the swing of (blogging) things.  I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I started doing it again, and I know that everything will go back to normal. Hopefully sooner, rather than later, but it’ll happen when it happens.

Have an awesome week!

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books From My Childhood I’d Love To Revisit

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely folks over at The Broke And The Bookish.  Every week, bloggers from all over share their own top ten list based on the topic of the week.  You can find all Top Ten Tuesdays here.

Top Ten Books From My Childhood/Teen Years I’d Love To Re-Visit

There are so many books that I read growing up that I loved and would love to re-read.  But I’m also sort of scared to re-visit them because I feel like some of them won’t hold up.  But at the same time, it would be so fun to re-read them as adult.  This was such an easy list, and honestly, I had a hard time stopping at ten, but then we’d end up with a super-long list, so I pretty much went with the first ten I thought of!

  1. Baby Sitters Club
  2. Goosebumps
  3. Boxcar Children
  4. Flowers In The Attic
  5. The Sweet Valley High Books…and all of it’s variations
  6. the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary
  7. Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison
  8. The American Girl books
  9. Pretty much anything by Lurlene McDaniel
  10. Sideways Stories From Wayside School

Book Talk: Insurgent, The Movie (And Soundtrack)…With Spoilers

Book Talk is a sporadic feature where I talk about bookish but non-book review things, and this time, I’m talking about Insurgent! Be warned, there are going to be major movie/book spoilers ahead.  You have been warned!

Book Talk

I really liked Insurgent, but not as much as I liked Divergent.  It’s great movie and a great adaptation, but for some reason, I’m just not as enthused about it as I was Divergent.  I saw it a couple of days ago, and while I really liked it, something about it seemed off, and I can’t pinpoint why.

I didn’t mind the changes they made for the movie.  It’s very streamlined and condensed, but I thought they did a great job with that.  It’s been a while since I’ve read the books, but I didn’t realize how much was cut until I started re-reading the book when I got home from the movies.  Like, most of the time at Amity and Candor were cut, as was the time back at Dauntless. And even some of those events were at Candor instead of Dauntless. I didn’t mind it, because the movie had a lot going on and something had to go.  It does make me curious about how some of the events in Allegiant are going to be handled with such a condensed movie.  But since there’s this trend where book trilogies become four movies (which I assume is going to happen with Allegiant), maybe there will be a little more they can put into the movies.

Because so many of the faction/faction-less scenes were cut from the movie, things were changed, and they actually made a lot of sense.  And were actually interesting.  Like, the scanner technology that knew what faction you were and if you were Divergent and how Divergent you were.  And all of the scenes in Erudite to get the information is easily solved by the simulation box that can only be opened by a Divergent.  Which does also explains why they’re looking at the percentages, because they need someone who’s Divergent enough to open the box.

Given they never mentioned that Tris is immune to the different serums, they really needed to explain it and set it up for Allegiant.  Actually, I didn’t mind that they didn’t explain it, since the percentage thing kind of implied that Tris is really special, while also setting it up to be explained in Allegiant.

It is a very different movie than Divergent, which I expected since it has to wrap up things from Divergent while setting up Allegiant.

I feel like I really need to talk about the soundtrack really quick!  I loved the Divergent soundtrack a lot (it’s been out for a year, and it’s still played on repeat quite frequently) but I didn’t really fall in love with it the way I did with Divergent’s soundtrack. Don’t get me wrong, all of the songs fit the movie and book so well.  They definitely go together very well, but it just didn’t grab me the way I thought it would.  I don’t know if it’s because I don’t have a lot of listening to music time right now (which is a completely different story, and entirely possible) and made myself listen to it in the middle of the night because that’s the only time I could get myself to listen to it or other reasons I’m too lazy to think of right now.  Given I’ve been in a low-energy funk lately, it could be that.

It is half the length of the Divergent soundtrack, and while the songs go well together, there was something about it that seemed like they weren’t as carefully chosen as it’s predecessor.  And I felt like the soundtrack wasn’t as integral to the movie as Divergent’s soundtrack was.  But maybe the Insurgent score is super-awesome- I’ll definitely have to give it a listen if I can manage to carve out some music time.  And after actually buying it, of course.

Overall, I really liked Insurgent, and it really was a good adaptation of the book.  The soundtrack went well with the movie too, but I do wish you had some of the songs scattered throughout the movie the way you did with Divergent.

Hope everyone has a happy Monday!
