Matt and Melissa Harris

I thought I’d double up on characters for this post, since I kinda gave up on character profiles by the time I got around to most of the Wildflower characters.  Since Matt and Melissa are siblings, it seemed appropriate to put them together.

Matt is about 25, while Melissa is around 20 or 21.  Matt plays for the Ashton Bears, while Melissa does…nothing.  I didn’t really have a job or school in mind for her, so she just kinda hangs out.

Matt plays the piano and he’s on the quiet side.  Melissa is very talkative and loves watching movies, especially while talking during movies.  Matt’s the middle child, and Melissa’s the youngest, which means they have at least one mysterious older sibling.  I didn’t really think about that either.  They’re from San Francisco.

Matt’s pretty loyal to his friends and teammates.  Melissa’s fairly bubbly, but doesn’t always think before she says or does anything.

Their profiles aren’t very filled out, because by the time I got around to working on them, they had started to sound like everyone else, and that’s never good.  Characters who deal with things in the same way, and act scarily similar are boring, so I gave up.  And then there was the fact that it was close to November, and I didn’t want to work on it in November.  If I do any work on them, I’ll post an update.

Justin Blair

Justin was one of Chloe’s roommates, until she moved out.

He’s around 25, with blonde hair and blue eyes.  He plays 2nd base for the Ashton Bears, making him one of Mike’s teammates.

He’s the youngest in his family, although I can’t remember how many siblings he has.  He’s extroverted, likes people, and tries to be a good role model.  He’s happy-go-lucky, but also tends to do first, and think later.

His profile isn’t really detailed.  By the time I got around around to most of the characters for Wildflower, I had done the ones for Turning Point, and everyone was starting to sound the same.  Plus, it was only a few days before November, and I didn’t really have enough time to do anything detailed, figuring I could do it during or after November.

I’m honestly not too concerned with finishing most of the Wildflower profiles, because it’s not one of my priorities.  Since they’re not detailed, I’ll probably start sharing a couple  characters whenever I talk about them.

Mike Adams

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about one of my characters, so this post has been long overdue.

Mike Adams is from Wildflower, and made his 1st appearance in my 2006 NaNo.

He’s 31, and has brown hair and brown eyes. He plays 3rd base for the Ashton Bears, and is an only child. He has a daughter (cassie, I still don’t have an age for her, but I feel like she’s around 4 or 5). He used to be married, but his wife died while they were in the process of getting divorced. In fact, the only reason why they got married was because of Cassie.

Everything he does is for Cassie, and he, at times, wishes that he had never pressured Cassie’s mom into getting married. He does want to get married again, but he’s going to be more cautious about it because of his 1st wife, and because of Cassie.

My favorite thing about him is that he’s very giving, thoughtful and generous, but he’s also a little too giving.  He wasn’t afraid to help Chloe out when she needed it, and would do anything for her.

I definitely set things up so that they’d end up together in the end, which is cliché.  He comes in and saves her, and after a while, they realize that the person they were looking for was in front of them all along.  Although, why not use clichés in November?  It’s not like I have the time to come up with something original or different.

But his concern for Chloe, and his appreciation for Chloe helping out with Cassie is sweet.  Anyone who dates him is going to have to be okay with his job (and not care about his money, despite what my handwritten notes say).  Liking kids is a must, and furthermore, if Cassie doesn’t like who he’s with, she’s probably not going to be in the picture for long.  And of course, all of the baggage from his 1st marriage.  She’s going to have to be okay with the fact that he has some regrets about that.

Chloe Douglas

Chloe is definitely one of my favorite characters, and one that is very near and dear to my heart.  She was the main character in my 2006 (and very first!) NaNo.

She definitely has a lot in common with me, and she was partly based off me.  I made up a lot of stuff about her life, but there are also a lot of things that happened to me that I ended up writing in.

So she’s an only child, lived with her grandparents and mom until they died, and never knew her dad.  She tends to bottle things up, tends to cry a lot, and avoids dealing with things.  She hates conflict, and only deals with it when she has to.

Her deepest, darkest secret is that by the time she’s no longer taking of anyone, and is fully on her own, she’ll be too old to care that she can finally live her own life.  She’s definitely motivated by fear, and is scared of change and being alone.  She has more family issues than she knows what to do with.

I never did a fun facts sheet for her, mostly because I didn’t have time, but she is a writer and wants to be a best-selling author.

2006 Sequel

This one started off well, and then halfway through I had no idea what to do with it.

I was glad I got to continue Chloe’s story, and look closely at the past that changed her.  From not knowing anything about her dad, and the overprotectiveness of her grandparents, I really put her through a lot.

About halfway through, I had no idea where to take it.  There were a few directions I could go in, and unfortunately none of the them spoke to me.  I could have furthered the finding her dad thing, I could have furthered her personal struggles to get over her past, I could have focused more on her writing struggles and work problems (which was what I had partly wanted to do at the beginning of the month).  Since none of them appealed to me mid-November, and as she complained/talked about her past, I decided I’d have her complain/think/reflect about different things that happened in her past.  It worked out okay, but it got tiresome after a while.

It did give me insight into her past, which will prove useful in any editing I do for this one.  I know I can rework her complaints/reflections into something more constructive and interesting, and even if  I end up cutting out that half of the book, it’s still really good background info on Chloe.

Considering I lost my steam halfway in, I’m really impressed that I managed to write 50k without using any dares or wordpadding techniques.

It’s highly likely I won’t be working on this one anytime soon, but I’ll still post character spotlights, and any updates should I start working on this one again.

Victory Song: Wildflower by The JaneDear Girls.  Yes, it’s country music, but I love country music.  Besides, it seemed appropriate because the story really is about Chloe changing and growing as a person, and figuring out how to cope and accept with what’s happened in her life.

Title: Nothing really jumped outside out to me, but Wildflower seems pretty appropriate, so I’ll stick with that one for now.
